Homosexuality and religion have always been a really sensitive topic for many people. The reason being that many religions have always shunned the gay community, stating that it is sinful to be sexually attracted to someone of the same sex.

It was this type of religious thinking that has plagued Chris Martin’s for years during his time as a teenager. The Coldplay lead singer went through a phase where he was questioning his sexual orientation at a boarding school. This resulted in him changing his mind about God and how homosexuality should be perceived.

During a lengthy interview with Rolling Stones founder and editorial director Jann Wenner, the two discussed about the 42-year-old’s religious upbringing and how it affected him during his time in a boarding school. He described himself as an odd kid and that he was terrified by the fact that he might be gay.

“‘Maybe I’m gay, maybe I’m this, maybe I’m that, I can’t be this’ so I was terrified. And then I walked a bit funny and I was in a boarding school with a bunch of quite hardcore kids who were also gone for their thing,” he told Wenner.

He remembered that “for a few years, they were very much like, ‘You’re definitely gay,’ in quite a full-on manner, quite aggressively telling me that and it was weird for me for a few years.”

When asked whether the singer thought of himself as gay at one point, he answered, “‘I don’t know and even if I am, I can’t be because it’s wrong. If I am, I can’t be’ so that was creating a terrible turmoil.” 

However, the UK born later revealed that he had a sudden change of heart stating that, “I don’t know what happened, but I was like, ‘Yeah so what?’ and then it all just stopped overnight. It was very interesting. Once I was like, ‘Yeah, so what if I’m gay.'”

He added that, “I don’t know what it was. Maybe it was reading about Elton. I really don’t remember. Maybe just growing up a bit and having a bit more exposure to the world thinking, ‘A lot of my heroes are gay’ or whatever. Whatever they are, it doesn’t really matter.”

This revelation took a weight off the “Yellow” singer’s shoulder when he had an a-ha moment. “So what that did was ease a big pressure and then made me question, ‘Hey maybe some of this stuff that I’m learning about God and everything — I’m not sure if I subscribe to all of this particular religion’,” the Grammy winner commented.

He stated that, “So for a few years that was a bit wobbly and then eventually I just was like, ‘Okay, I think I have my own relationship with what I think God is and it’s not really any one religion for me.’”

With the glitz and glam of Urbanscapes last weekend, we managed to steal a moment with indie rising stars The Marias! Known for performing songs in both English and Spanish, the band quickly captured the hearts of plenty with their dreamy sound.

Thanks to UMobile, we at Hype managed to catch the band for a quick chat!

When asked to describe what their creative process was like, the band paused for a bit. “Sometimes it starts with like just a melody, sometimes it starts with a drumbeat that Josh will come up with.” started Maria Reál, the lead vocalist of the group. Each song feels more of like a moment in time that has been successfully captured and turned into an object of permanence.

“No two songs have been made the same,” said Josh Conway, the vocalist, and producer of the group (who also plays drums!) added that there wasn’t really a formula for how they make their music. Perhaps that’s what adds authenticity to The Marias dreamy sound.

As it has been a while since we heard anything new from the Los Angeles natives, we pressed on for news of the much-awaited upcoming release that is being teased on their Instagram. “We’ll be releasing something beginning of next year as a precursor to something… a bigger project,” said Maria with a little smile on her lips. “Think of it as a little taste to what’s to come.”

When the topic turned into dream collaborations, members immediately began throwing out names of indie artists that were a little too underground for our radar. However, when Maria mentioned Sabrina Claudio, everything seemed to click. The indie starlet herself had only just visited Malaysia a few months back for the biggest music festival of the year, Good Vibes Festival, and had charmed all of us with her seductive dance moves and husky voice. We could see the two artists matching energies and genres pretty easily to make an even dreamier yet sexy track. Maria also added that the ultimate dream collaboration would probably boil down to Tame Impala, one of the group’s biggest inspirations.

We wanted to know what was The Marias’ favourite part of being a musician, and their answer had us going “awww” for a bit. Unabashedly, everyone simultaneously agreed that it was seeing the reaction of fans from all around the world. They were especially excited to play for the Malaysian crowd as they had no idea what to expect. It’s this excitement that keeps them on their toes, making them want more each time they perform.

“Different crowds give completely different energies,” explained Maria as she picked apart the most avid difference between playing a show back home in the laid back and cool LA versus anywhere else in the world. Josh noted that the most memorable crowd would be from Mexico, when they played a show that was delayed by an hour and yet turned out to be the craziest one yet.

When thrown the idea of playing a dream venue, the band got visibly excited by the possibilities. Instead of naming your usual stadiums and festivals, The Marias had other ideas. “It will be an all-ages show, free, and have amazing food,” started Maria, “but ultimately a waste-free festival in a forest.” The rest of the band tittered at this, adding on about their choice of forest possibly being outside of Oregon.

As our interview came to a close, we asked the band what could the world expect from The Marias come 2020. Maria smiled confidently as she confirmed that there will not only be more new music, but more shows to come from them too! Perhaps we will be seeing the psychedelic-soul group performing here in Malaysia again sooner than we think. Either way, it looks like it’s a great time to be a fan of The Marias.

Another day another surprise from McDonald’s as the fast food giant has announced the return of their iconic Twister Fries.

Usually introduced during Chinese New Year, the Twister Fries have always been a fan-favourite even in the early days of it’s inception. There’s just something special about the curly shape fries that made people demand more of the salty treat.

The Twister Fries’ return was announced earlier in the week (4th December 2019) via the McDonald’s social media page, where they uploaded a picture of their iconic fries getting a perm. Talk about creative marketing.

Currently, not a lot of information is being attached with the return of Twister Fries. This means that it would be hard to say whether the return would be made permanent or be a limited time offer. Rest assured, if any information do surfaced about the beloved McDonald’s treat we will sure to update it here, stay tuned.

Godfrey Gao (高以翔)’s death has certainly taken everyone by surprise, and by looking at reports about all the plans he had, it is clear that he certainly was gone too soon. Apparently the star intended to propose to his long time girlfriend Bella Su.

It was reported that Gao had plan to pop the question on 28th November, which was a day after his passing. According to close friend “DJ”, Darren Jiang, the model had even arranged for a dinner reservation for Su and had invited both his and her family to attend.

“Now I finally realize why you suddenly texted me and asked me where I was that day,” said DJ on social media. “Because the two of you had a really important dinner to go. You hoped that I would be there as your witness, to help you prepare for a new chapter in your life.”

The actor sadly collapsed on the set of the Chinese reality show “Chase Me” in Zhejiang, China and died after suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest. His body has since been transported back to Taiwan where his funeral is being held. His girlfriend Bella Su and several other close friends has also spotted.

His death has highlighted the dangers of reality TV, with how certain shows tend to push stars to their limits in both physical and mental health. Hopefully, TV studios will take extra precaution next time by providing on-site medical treatment facilities and tightening up on safety measures.

During the 9-member group’s take on their hit-song “Wonderland”, they prepared a special mash-up performance with other past popular jams including BTS’ “Blood, Sweat & Tears”, SHINee’s “View” and miss A’s “Goodbye Baby”. After main vocal Jongho delivered his flawless high note, Mingi started to unbutton his vest and delivered an energetic dance break.

4. Seventeen’s Wonwoo’s blows CARATs’ hearts away with blood-sucking stage charisma

For the segment “Alternate Universe #17”, Seventeen performed their 2019 hits “Fear” and also “Hit”. The one that caught everyone’s attention would be rapper Wonwoo’s eye-catching opening lines.

The Changwon-born idol sure blew CARATs away with his pale and dapper vampire-inspired look during the show. To quote Koreaboo, fans “couldn’t decide between being scared or be in awe by his stage presence.”

3. GOT7 Jackson’s priceless reaction to Mamamoo x JYP performance

K-pop quintet Mamamoo and Park Jinyoung (JYP) had a special collaboration for the segment called “Glamorous Party”, where they performed some of their biggest hit songs together on stage. Member Hwasa performed her debut single “Twit” and “Don’t Leave Me” with the legendary singer-songwriter. After a killer dance performance, the duo ended their pose with the 24-year-old sitting on JYP’s lap.

Known as a living meme among K-fans, GOT7’s Jackson’s reaction was the best though. In this case, the Hong Kong-born K-pop idol was seen awestruck by the performance, keeping his mouth opened as the segment took place. Check out some of fans’ tweets here:

2. Hwasa and Dua Lipa’s adorable reaction on stage

Another notable highlight from Hwasa during the show was the sizzling special stage collaboration between her and British pop star Dua Lipa. During the segment called “Make The New Rules”, the “I Live Alone” star wowed the crowd with a cover of Dua’s signature hit “New Rules”, before she introduced the Grammy-award-winning songstress on stage to perform “Don’t Start Now”.

Not only that, Dua was also honoured with the “International Favourite Artiste” award. The trophy was presented by none other than Hwasa herself. The duo then shared a cute hug together as Dua were preparing to deliver her speech.

1. BTS took fans back to 2013 with throwback stage

Indeed, eagle-eyed ARMYs have tons of their personal favourite moments of the 7-member band during their appearance last night. This includes Jin’s birthday hat, non-stop VMin (V and Jimin fanship) interaction on-stage during their “Boy With Luv” as well as their reaction to other performing idols.

But the one that we want to highlight would be the group’s energetic take on their past hit songs such as “N.O” and “We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2”. In this case, it was very heartwarming for fans who grew up together with them and witness their successful achievements.

Another interesting highlight would be the “The Genesis Of Time” segment featuring our favourite Cinderella, Chungha. However, Byulharangs (Chungha’s fandom name) started pointing out that the ex-IOI member was given a limited amount of time during her performance.

Despite the fact, the 23-year-old still managed to deliver an outstanding performance of her popular song “Gotta Go”. If you don’t believe us, then check out the video above:

Jackie Chain might be able to work his magic in cinemas, but for the companies that he endorsed, that’s another story altogether.

The jokes started following the concerning news about Hong Kong Airlines’ struggle, who are currently facing some deep financial difficulties. Netizens pointed out that the entire situation might have something to do with Jackie Chan being the airline’s spokesperson.

As mentioned, the airline is facing some trying times as the ongoing protest and political situation in Hong Kong has caused quite a bit of damage to its business. They were also given 5 days to pay off their staff salaries by the Hong Kong’s Transport and Housing Board (THB), who threatened to suspend or revoke the airline’s operation license if they failed to do so.

Amidst the news, netizens have jokingly suggest that crisis is bound to happen when a company hires Jackie Chan to be their endorser. Some have even pointed to several failed companies that have met with similar financial crisis after endorsing the Hong Kong actor. It’s situations like these that earned the Hong Kong star the nickname, “brand killer”, by netizens.

Jokes aside, it should be noted that none of these failed business were blamed on the actor. Many of them were just filled with issues of their own doing, such as Synear’s products being found to have golden staph bacteria by Beijing authorities, and Ai-duo VCD electronics being riddled by lawsuits which lead to its shutdown.

Malaysian veteran singer Datuk Nassier Wahab has sadly passed away yesterday (5th December 2019) at the age of 57.

Known for a string of hit songs such as “Memori Cinta Luka”, “Sekali Aku Jatuh Cinta” and “Bayangan Wajah Luka”, Nassier died after a long battle of gum cancer, leaving behind his wife Datin Fatimah Abdul Raof and their daughter, Intan Najihah.

The new trailer for the highly anticipated Disney live adaptation, “Mulan”, is here. In it gave us a first look into Jet Li’s characters and 2 new villains.

The trailer released yeasterday (5th December 2019), showed us Jet Li all dressed up as the emperor of China and how his fellow cast members will look in the movie. Not only that, the trailer has also gave us an insight on how the adaptation’s story will differ from the original animated film.

The film that is directed by New Zealand film director, Niki Caro, stars Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu) in the titular role of Hua Mulan. The story will revolve around Mulan, who disguises herself as a man to protect her family and China from the northern invaders.

Although, the new adaptation shared the same premise as the 1998 animated film, there are still some notable differences that can be found between the two. One difference is the inclusion of a new villain – a shapeshifting witch named Xian Lang played by Gong Li. She will work alongside the original villain of the series, Bori Khan played by Jason Scott Lee, to invade China.

Another addition to the adaptation is Mulan’s sister, Hua Xiu played by Xana Tang, who didn’t exist in the animated version. Other cast members include Donnie Yen as Mulan’s mentor, Commander Tung, Yoson An as soldier Chen Honghui and potential love interest; Tzi Ma as Mulan’s aging father, Rosalind Chao as her mother, and Jet Li as the emperor of China.

But one character that will be absent from the 2020 flick is Mushu, Mulan’s guardian from the animated film. Instead, according to the trailer it seems that Mulan’s new guardian will be a phoenix, however, no information have been given on how the phoenix will fit into the plot at the moment.

The hairstylist, named Kim Huang, revealed the concern in a lengthy post on his Instagram account. Huang shared about his final moments with the “Min & Max” star, and how the star noted that he was worried about filming the program, as he felt that he was coming down with a cold due to the bad weather in Taiwan.

The post reads, “That day (Nov 25), you said the recent weather in Taipei left people feeling unwell. You also felt like you were having a cold and told me to take care of myself because the weather was unpredictable. You said you wanted a trim because you were going to shoot a reality show the following day.”

The stylist then continued, “You said it was a physically challenging programme and you were worried you could not complete it. I gave you a pat on the shoulder and told you not to worry because these tests mean nothing to you. You exercised regularly, played basketball and worked out at the gym.”

Huang added, “In the short two-minute walk (to the car), we were talking and laughing. When we reached the elevator lobby of the carpark, you looked at me, smiled, and said, ‘I’ll make a move first. We’ll meet again on Thursday.’ Why has all of these become our final memories?”

Gao’s Hairstylist also revealed that “The Jade Pendant” actor intended to come back after finishing the shoot on 28th November, to get his hair fixed up for close-friend James Mao’s wedding. It’s the wedding where Gao was supposed to be Mao’s best man.

Let this be a lesson to people to always take care of one’s health, even if it meant sacrificing a few days of work.

As mentioned before in our previous article, Inha took part in the drama “Lovers With Flaws” (하자있는 인간들) that is currently airing on MBC as the character Joo Wonsuk. Despite the unfortunate news, it was revealed that the production will continue on airing scenes involving the Surprise U member.

In addition, fellow actors and friends of Inha have taken to their social media accounts to address his passing. Some of the artistes include his “Lovers With Flaws” cast mates like Oh Yeonseo, Min Woohyuk and Heo Jungmin.

The event kicked off with the performance of our very own up-and-coming alternative rockstars, Lost Spaces. Despite being the opening act, they never failed to leave a good impression to the crowd. During the event, they wowed the fans with energetic renditions of their popular songs like “Bad Motel”, “35 mm” and “Soft Tides”.

Before continuing with their performance of their retro-driven single “Discohaze”, frontman Samuel Lopez asked the fans to dance and sing along with them, which in turn received loud cheering from everyone. They then closed their segment with “Fake Guitars” and “Boxset Girlfriend”.

Up next was city-pop band SOBS. The Singaporean-based band performed a string of their signature songs including “Vacation”, “Catflap”, “Astronomy” and “Eastbound”. Not only that, they also performed some of their latest singles as a special gift for their fans in Malaysia. Their performance include “Air Guitar”, “World Implode” and “LOML”. After thanking everyone for inviting them to the show, they then performed their last song for the night, “Telitale Signs”.

The lights went out in preparation for the next act, Sunset Rollercoaster. One of the most anticipated entertaners during the night, the 6-member Taiwanese band heated up the stage with a string of chilled and mellowed down performance of their hit songs including “Vanilla”, “Almost Mature”, “Burning Red” and “Greedy”. After addressing the audience, they continued heating up the stage with live performances of “Summum Bonum”, “Angel Disco Love”, before ending their segment with their most famous jam, “My Jinji”.

After Sunset Rollercoaster exited the stage, the lights started to dim once again. As the crew started to clear up the stage to make room for the final performer of the night, the audience started to chant “Pablo! Pablo! Pablo!” as they called out Boy Pablo on stage. A few moments later, the 5-member band appeared right in front of fans’ eyes to perform their songs “Fantasizing” and “IMREALLYTIRED”.

Die hard fans of the Norwegian ensemble started to go bananas as they sang along to each and every word of their songs including “Feeling Lonely”, “Ur Phone”, “JD’s Song”, “Sick Feeling” as well as the medley “Ready/Problems”, “Limitado” and “Beach House”.

Just when we thought the boys were running out of energy after the non-stop upbeat sequences, they took it up another notch with a series of energetic performances for songs including “Never Cared”, “Everytime”, “TKM”, “T-shirt”, and “50 souls”. The crowd continued to sing and dance along to their signature upbeat numbers along with the colourful lightings of the stage that accompanied the hot night.

Before they performed their last songs, vocalist Soy Pablo thanked everyone for having them here in our country. He then asked the fans to dance their heart out and enjoy the night. They then closed the show with performing “WTF” and “Dance Baby”.

Netflix has finally released its 1st trailer for its brand new original web series called “Messiah” recently.

Based on the official announcement below, the upcoming thriller show will be available for streaming on 1st January next year.

However, the newly-released clip has in turn received mixed reactions from netizens. In this case, some of them pointed that the series will give people wrong ideas on Imam Mahdi.

In addition, others have argued about their concerns that the drama series might “brainwash” everyone’s perspective on the dajjal (deceiver), whom Muslims believe as the false messiah (saviour).

Not only that, some also expressed their frustration by slamming Belgian actor Mehdi Dehbi who played the character as Al-Massih Ad-Dajjal, relating to the fact that the 34-year-old is actually a Muslim. For those who are interested, feel free to read some their reactions on Twitter here:

Also if you just focus on his physical appearance, long hair, beard, Arabic face and all you will notice they are trying to portray the image of Imam Mehdi. Initially when people were told that media is their biggest weapon to control the masses, they used to laugh.

There was a time when Sony was about to pull the plug on Spider-Man’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was due to a disagreement they had with Marvel’s owner Disney. However, the decision was resolved after the two media giant reconciled, resulting in Spider-Man being firmly placed back into the MCU.

The reconciliation was thanks in no small part to the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” actor, Tom Holland. According to many, he was the person that brought both Sony and Disney back to the discussion table. It’s even more impressive knowing that he did it while being drunk.

Appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, the 23-year-old opened up on his experience following the collapse of the deal between Sony and Disney that allowed Spider-Man to appear in Marvel films.

In the interview he recalled, “We were at D23, which is the big Disney convention, and the news had come out and I was obviously devastated. I was really upset, and all my Marvel friends were there, and they were taking Marvel pictures and I was like, not allowed to be in them; it was awful.” 

“It was not the best day. But anyway, I asked if I could get Bob Iger’s email because I just wanted to say, ‘Thank you. This has been an amazing five years of my life. Thank you for changing my life in the best way and I hope that we can work together in the future,’” he continued. “And I got his email, I sent him the email and then he responded very quickly saying ‘I’d love to jump on the phone at some point. When are you free?’ And you don’t give Bob a schedule. You say, ‘Whenever, Bob!'”

Iger, the CEO of Disney, would eventually call the “Avengers: Endgame” star a few days later at a rather inconvenient time. “Two, three days go by and then my family and I went to the pub quiz in our local town,” Holland told the host. “We’re doing a quiz and I’m three pints in, haven’t eaten much, and I get a phone call from an unknown number and I have a feeling. I’m like, ‘I think this is Bob Iger but I’m drunk.’”

The UK native admitted that he was initially hesitant to receive the call, but was encouraged by his father to pick up, despite him being drunk. This then lead to a series of discussion with between Him, Iger and Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman Tom Rothman, which ended up with a new deal being struck between Disney and Sony.

The “Spider-Man: Far From Home” star did admitted that there were plans on where to take Spider-Man by Sony, however, “It would’ve been a shame to take him out of the MCU,” he said. “It’s where he belongs and we’ve built such a strong character out of that world and it would’ve been a shame to lose that.”
