Concert Review: Snow Patrol’s Unplugged Gig Won Our Hearts Over

Irish-Scottish band, Snow Patrol, caused a stir in the community when they announced that they were stopping by Kuala Lumpur for their stripped-down show. Snow Patrol Acoustic was held in KL Live on the 30th of August 2019, presented by U Mobile.

The unplugged gig featured only two of the band’s usual roundup; frontman Gary Lightbody and guitarist Nathan Connolly. Their show included an opening act from Ryan McMullan, a rising Irish artist, who also played the keyboard for the show later the night.

Fans were buzzing hours before the show started, mainly due to how this was the band’s first visit to Malaysia. After waiting for 25 years, it seems like a few hours worth of waiting time was pretty much nothing. Once they flocked the inner space of KL Live, only minutes separated them from seeing their favourite act in the flesh.

Ryan McMullan took the stage with a grin before plunging right into it. It was a very strong opening, with his soulful voice effortlessly getting everyone into the mood of the night. Paired with the romantic lighting, it was easy to fall in love with the lad as he crooned to the crowd. His singing style echoed distinctly of Ed Sheeran, but it was mainly his wit and charm that got the crowd swooning. One of his songs even featured a sample of “Maniac” by Michael Sembello.

Before McMullan performed his final song, he mentioned how he was selling some merchandise outside of the venue. “I’m poor, you know,” he joked, which earned quite a few chuckles from the crowd. After pushing for sales a bit more, he rocked out one last time before Snow Patrol finally came out.

As the cheers reached its peak, Gary Lightbody and Nathan Connolly took their places on stage (joined by Ryan McMullan on the piano) as they began playing the intro to “Chocolate”. The crowd went feral, singing along passionately to every word. However after 2 more songs in, Lightbody smiled sheepishly about messing up “This Isn’t Everything You Are”. “Sorry, we’re not very well organised,” he said with a laugh before starting from the top again.

Lightbody turned out to be quite a talkative fella, despite his quiet demeanor. After warming up to the crowd a bit, he mentioned how McMullan actually joined the tour as a last minute thing – which involved him learning 17 Snow Patrol songs within the span of a week.

As the crowd gasped at the statement, Lightbody joked that it could be either a punishment or a blessing depending on what you think of their music. After gaining a few laughs from the crowd, the show continued on.

Processed with VSCO with hb2 preset

However it was during “Don’t Give In” that the crowd noticed how Lightbody was struggling to sing comfortably. He then admitted that he was diagnosed with a throat and chest infection earlier today but was adamant on not canceling tonight’s show. Fans were very touched by the sentiment and were more than happy to sing along to help him out where he couldn’t.

The singalong of the night was loudest with “Run” and “Chasing Cars”. Though it was expected, considering how they are the most popular songs by the group, it was really touching to see how brightly Lightbody lit up (pun intended).

Despite how bad his voice got as the show progressed, the man fought on. It was partially amusing to his facial expressions as he tried to pull it off but ended up failing to suppress the sheepish smiles and awkward laughs when he messed up.

He got the crowd to sing the refrain for “What If This Is All The Love You Get” and even went as far as miming out the lyrics to help them singalong. Despite it all, Snow Patrol managed to perform a full setlist (with cuts to certain tracks) and 2 more songs as an encore for their Malaysian fans.

As a final hurrah before wrapping up their premature South East Asia unplugged show, the band members expressed their gratitude to how reactive and empathetic the crowd was.

In the final picture on this chain I look like I’m being chased by a giant monster with wonky eyes. Just saying. Thank you to everyone that came to the show in Kuala Lumpur last night. Our first time playing there and great our first show there was to a packed room with such a great atmosphere. As you might be aware now we have had to cancel the last two shows of the tour in Jakarta and Singapore. We are so sorry to have to do that. Anyone that was at the show in Kuala Lumpur last night will attest I struggled to sing much of anything and we had to face the fact that I need to rest for a bit. I hate having to cancel and will do shows in any state I’m in (even if I might mention being under the weather on stage sometimes I’ll still do the shows and sing my damn heart out) but as I sang harder and harder last night it got worse and worse. All caused by a throat/chest infection I’m on antibiotics for at the moment. This is not a long term problem, I just need some rest. Sorry again. I hate missing shows. Jakarta and Singapore we will make it up to you when we go back on tour with a new album I promise. Loads of love to you all. And thank you all for this tour of south east Asia. It has been amazing. Gutted not to get to finish it properly but thank you all so much. gL.x. 📷 @allisamazing

Overall, Snow Patrol’s debut gig in Malaysia was a success. Personally we’re a bit upset that “Set The Fire To The Third Bar” got axed from the setlist, but it was still worth every bit to see how touched Lightbody and Connolly were to see a whole crowd of people from the other side of the world belting out all the words to a song that came out in 2006.

It appears that Gillian Chung’s (鍾欣桐) marriage to Michael Lai (賴弘國) has come under the spotlight due to a 3rd party.

A netizen on Weibo recently caused quite a stir when the stranger accused Gillian’s 30-year-old husband of having an affair. Turns out it was a false alarm. What goes around though, comes right back around…

The Weibo user stirred the pot when he claimed that the Taiwanese doctor was cheating on 38-year-old singer while she was away for work. The person even showed the receipts to prove that alleged affair was “real”.

The “evidence” showed a screen capture of Michael had followed a popular Taiwanese Instagram star Ning Chao (趙寧寧), but quickly unfollowed her when he got called out. There was even a snapshot of him looking flushed during a Facetime session as well as some private direct messages.

After news portals had caught wind of this supposed scandal, word spread like wildfire. Gillian took to her social media to address the rumour, insisting that it is based on falsehood and maintained that her husband is a loyal man. Her beau also echoed her sentiments online.

Not long after, Weibo user TanGuo_ issued a public apology to the married couple and Ning Chao for dragging her into the mess. He confessed that he was unaware that the female influencer was actually a patient at Michael’s clinic.

In response, Michael has stated that his lawyer will be taking action against the culprit for damaging his reputation.

Malaysia’s Adele Lim Quits Crazy Rich Asians Sequel Over Pay Dispute

Justice for Adele Lim! It’s evident that Hollywood is still sexist when it comes to women – especially if she’s a woman of colour.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that the Malaysian-born writer has opted out of the “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel due a pay disparity. It is understood that she was offered 8-10 times lesser than her fellow co-writer, Peter Chiarelli, a white man.

Source: Google Images

The publication reported that Warner Bros. is only offering to pay Lim US$110,000-plus while Chiarelli was offered between US$800,000 to US$1 million. Warners apparently defended their unfair decision citing “the quotes are industry-standard established ranges based on experience and that making an exception would set a troubling precedent in the business”. That’s because Chiarelli had previous movie experiences while Lim came from the world of TV.

The Malaysian Chinese descent, who was the first movie’s only Asian writer, said, “Being evaluated that way can’t help but make you feel that is how they view my contributions“. She believes that the industry often regard women as well as people of colour as soy sauce – “hired to sprinkle culturally specific details on a screenplay, rather than credited with the substantive work of crafting the story“.

Source: Google Images

Here’s the interesting part, the dispute actually took place last autumn. After spending 5 months searching for another Asian writer to replace Lim, Warner Bros returned to her in February 2019 with a better offer – a salary closer to Chiarelli. Lim wasn’t having any of it.

Chiarelli had offered to split his pay cheque with Lim, but there is a bigger issue that needed to come under the spotlight. “Pete has been nothing but incredibly gracious, but what I make shouldn’t be dependent on the generosity of the white-guy writer. If I couldn’t get pay equity after ‘CRA’, I can’t imagine what it would be like for anyone else, given that the standard for how much you’re worth is having established quotes from previous movies, which women of colour would never have been (hired for). There’s no realistic way to achieve true equity that way,” Lim responded.

Source: Warner Bros.

To echo commentator Ben Pearson, taking the higher offer would probably had been the easier choice but Lim was willing to forgo it in hopes of equalling the playing field for minorities in Hollywood. Shame on you, Warner Bros.

Filming for the back-to-back sequels is expected to begin towards the end of 2020.

The royal family members of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah have been getting significant attention these days.

Recently, a photo of Agong’s daughter Tengku Puteri Afzan Aminah Hafidzatullah Al-Sultan Abdullah went viral. The picture shows the royal princess glancing – as if she’s giving a side eye.

Source: Twitter

The photo was captured while Tengku Puteri Afzan and her sister Tengku Puteri Jihan Azizah Athiyatullah were attending the Maal Hijrah celebration held in the Royal Palace last weekend, on Sunday (1st September 2019).

An internet user known as @journaljeeb (Twitter username) pointed out her facial expression in the picture, asking her “What are you glancing at, Tengku?”. She then retweeted the tweet by jokingly said “Hahahaha I’m always glancing.”

Source: Twitter

Additionally, Tengku Afzan also clarified to her followers that she has inherited this sort of expression since her childhood days. She even posted a picture of herself while she was still young as “evidence” for the netizens.

Both of the tweets have caused an overwhelming reaction among the Internet community. Most of them praise the Royal Highness for her beauty. Some netizens also gave a few hilarious remarks towards Tengku Puteri’s facial expression.

Check out the baby photo of Tengku Puteri Afzan as well as some of the fans’ reaction to the tweet below:

Rihana Oksana Talks About Sultan Muhammad V’s Previous Marriage & Islam Exposure

Rihana Oksana is peeling off the layers bit by bit. Despite many attempting to silence her, the new mum has been making good use of her social media platform to tell her truth.

In her revealing post, the Russian beauty continued part 3 of her story. This time detailing about Sultan Muhammad V’s former marriage to Tengku Zubaidah Tengku Norudin. She also recalled one of her first exposures to Islam traditions.

In her words:

When I first saw my husband for the first time in my life, I didn’t know why, but I had a thought in my mind that he was the future father of my children. But I quickly tried to get rid of these thoughts since it was too early to think about it in that moment.

Before my husband insisted on moving to Malaysia, I asked him if he was married and whether he had any children. He told me that he got divorced in 2015 (wikipedia notes that the divorce happened in 2008) because his ex-wife from Czech Republic had lied to him that she was not married, and according to the documents she was not divorced in her country.”

Source: Instagram

The 27-year-old continued:

He shared with me that women always used him for money and that is why nobody gave him any babies. He told me that he had never had children, and that was the biggest dream of his life.

When we arrive in Malaysia, my husband appeared before me in a traditional costume, and I asked why he was dressed so strangely (for me). And suddenly, he spread the prayer mat and began to pray in front of me. That was the first time I saw a Muslim pray. After he finished, he told me that one day he would teach me everything about Islam.”

It’s interesting to note that despite their triple talaq divorce, Rihana still refers to the former Agong as her “husband”. Despite that, many were shocked as they weren’t even aware that Sultan Muhammad V was previously married to Tengku Zubaidah binti Tengku Norudin (née Kangsadal Pipitpakdee).

Rihana Oksana

In addition, the Russian beauty has also slammed Singapore lawyer Koh Tien Hua for previously hinting that baby Leon wasn’t the legitimate son of Sultan Muhammad V.

We’re not quite sure how she obtained the candid picture of him eating chicken rice. It’s not like they’re besties.

Yo lain kali nak hantar barang, hantar yang ade tanduk lah.. you better pray to the devil that i dont find you. 🐅 RM30,000 cash reward for the person who can identify: 1. The bomoh 2. And the person who paid the bomoh. P.S- guys im so sorry for not being like my usual self lately. Caprice jarang ambik port pasal bende spiritual / hantu / sihir semua ni. But lately, so much weird shit have been happening around me and my friends. Caprice baru balik dari tengok movie tibe2 jumpe a dead pelicit macam terbakar with rambut coming out from the body. Im tired bro. I dont know what to believe. I just want answers. And then i also want to slap the person behind this before letting God handle the rest. 🐅

A post shared by Caprice (@capriceofficial) on

The object was revealed to be a burned dead insect – which Caprice claimed as a ‘pelesit’ (evil spirit or demon) – with a strand of hair coming out from its body.

For those who might not know, traditional Malay folklore often associates the ‘pelesit’ with insects such as grasshoppers or bush crickets as they are believed to be able to transform into those animals.

Caprice further added that he usually won’t put much attention on such superficial nonsense. However, he believed that there are people who are not happy with him, as he clarified that there “has been so much shit happening around him” as well as his friends.

The rapper was left furious upon finding the object. In the same post, he also offered RM30,000 cash reward for whoever could reveal the identity of the “bomoh” (shaman) as well as the person who paid the bomoh.

He wrote on his Instagram, “The next time you want to send something over, send something with horns la. You better pray to the devil that I don’t find you.”

In addition, Caprice also expressed his disappointment following the shocking discovery, “I’m tired bro. I don’t know what to believe. I just want answers. And then I also want to slap the person behind this before letting God handle the rest. 🐅

This is pretty scary. We’d be freaking out too if someone did this to us.

Riri Williams is the teenager who continues Iron Man’s legacy in the comic books. We could very see her as the newest Iron-based superhero. Similar to Paul Bettany’s J.A.R.V.I.S., Downey Jr. will likely return in a voiceover capacity for her suit’s AI.

The most telling clue of “Ironheart” was when the 54-year-old actor recently brought the female hero writer Eve Ewing up on stage at the Film Center Gala few months ago. He publicly proclaim that Ironheart needs to be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This seems like the most logical move seeing as how Spider-Man is no longer in the MCU (for now).

In conjunction with Marvel’s 80th Anniversary UT series, Uniqlo will be launching a new collection of superhero attire.

The upcoming “Uniqlo x Marvel” collection, which is set to debut this month, will be divided into 2 different themes. It’ll be the Marvel Retro Gaming UT Series and the Marvel Hoodie Series.

Source: Goody25 via Ezone

The Marvel Retro Gaming UT Series was inspired by retro video game consoles. Remember the pixelated character design games we used to play when we were younger? This collection certainly brings us back to our game boy days. The best part? These designs are also available for children.

Instead of just limiting it to t-shirts, Uniqlo’s Marvel Hoodie Series are also expected to fly off the shelves. Show your support of your Marvel heroes – be it from the Avengers, X-Men, and more. The retro designs are minimalistic and versatile so you don’t have to limit it to just Marvel occasions.

Both the Marvel Retro Gaming UT Series and the Marvel Hoodie Series are expected to debut on Uniqlo Malaysia’s website on Malaysia Day (16th September) and Uniqlo Malaysia stores.

Concert Review: DREAMCATCHER Weaved A Wonderful “Nightmare” For Malaysian Fans

$

0

In this endless repeating nightmare, stay trapped like this forever” – those are the words of taste breaking K-pop girl group, Dreamcatcher. Despite being birthed from the industry of many saccharine sounds, do not be mistaken; these 7 girls are nothing like what you’d expect.

On the 6th of September 2019, Dreamcatcher was kind enough to extend us Malaysians an “Invitation From Nightmare City”. The concert was organised by JS Concert Productions in collaboration with My Music Taste and was held at KL Live. It was the group’s debut performance in Malaysia as well, which added to the excitement of fans.

Dreamcatcher consists of Jiu, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, Sua, Dami, Handong, and Gahyeon – all gorgeous girls with an insidious agenda. What sets them apart from your average girl group is the very foundation of what Dreamcatcher is built on. Whilst most girl groups sell you a fantasy, Dreamcatcher does something similar – except they’re selling you a horror induced nightmare.

With heavy metal riffs and terrifying music video plots, the group has made quite a statement for themselves and built an incredibly dedicated fan base. Known as Insomnia, their fans flooded the venue to give our fan kits (ranging from transparent fans to hand banners) and exchanging freebies amongst themselves. “The girls themselves are very lively, so it’s going to be an energetic performance,” said David, an avid fanboy who was especially excited to see Dreamcatcher perform their latest single.

30 minutes before the show, the venue switched up the usual Top 40 hits for Dreamcatcher songs instead – which instantly rejuvenated the crowd. The moment the hair-raising music box intro of “Good Night” played, everyone sprang to life. This served as a good appetiser for the ravenous crowd, who gulped every last bit of it.

When the lights finally dimmed and the girls came out, they started strong by opening with “Fly High” and their debut title track, “Chase Me”. The stage lighting was almost as explosive as their music, matching every erratic switch up in their songs. Though it did make it a tad hard to focus on the members but their natural allure kept us going. Perhaps fans weren’t kidding when they mentioned how dangerous their charms were!

The lights came back on for the girls to greet their Malaysian fans and say their hellos briefly before continuing. They moved on into the milder “Which A Star” and “Emotion”, which was quite fitting after all the bellows they received. It was quite satisfying to see the versatility of the group; going from heavy metal to emotional ballads all in less than 10 minutes and done in such a flawless fashion.

Member Sua even playfully added, “Keep your focus on us, okay?” after finishing their slower numbers, as a way to prep the crowd for what was to come. “Sleep Walking” was an especially enthralling track, which mixed mystery, electro-pop, and dread all into one. The girls also showed a little more of their seductive side with the coquettish “Wonderland”, which set the mood for what came next.

Keeping in the theme, Dreamcatcher then performed a series of covers–beginning with the anthem for sexiness, “Havana” by Camila Cabello. However, all was washed away with their next stage; a medley of hit songs by famous K-pop boy groups! Performing BTS’ “Boy With Luv”, EXO’s “Loveshot”, Monsta X’s “Alligator”, NCT 127’s “Simon Says” and even rookie group ATEEZ’s “Hala Hala”! Fans were surprised to say the least but definitely impressed by the change in aura that Dreamcatcher brought to the stage.

The covers didn’t stop there, so it turns out to be yet another win for K-pop fans. Dividing into units, Sua and Siyeon performed as a duo to Taemin’s “Sayonara Hitori” while Jiu, Handong, Yoohyeon, Dami, and Gahyeon performed a little of Twice’s iconic “TT” and Red Velvet’s sultry “Bad Boy”.

It was clear that Dreamcatcher themselves were very comfortable on stage as performers. The girls kept on sneaking smiles during performances and even little waves to the crowd as they danced to their numbers. Malaysian Insomnias were in for a lot of fan service as well, with the girls giving out gifts via lucky draw while trying their best to accommodate their fans wishes. Dreamcatcher is general are very animated, which made them even more entertaining to watch. It’s no wonder they’re so well-loved by their fans.

They performed all their hits; “What”, “Good Night”, “You and I”, but it was “Piri” that had the loudest cheers of the night. Being their latest and most popular single, the girls got everyone to stand up from their seats to go wild to the track as the flute intro began playing over the speakers. With that, Malaysian Insomnias cheered along as loudly as their lungs allowed them to.

After that, the girls came together to say their final words. The youngest member, Gahyeon, mentioned how she was initially a little worried when she first heard all the cheers from backstage. “It was a great pleasure to see all the Insomnia fans!” she said with a smile, which fuelled more cheers from the crowd.

Member Dami shared her thoughts as well, saying how there were more fans than she expected and how thankful she was for it. Leader Jiu shared similar sentiments to Gahyeon, and told the crowd in English that was worried about not performing well either. “But after 1 song, I just enjoyed it!” she said with a laugh, which made the crowd cheer her on.

With bids of “Saya cinta kamu!”, the girls said goodbye ducked backstage to prepare for the encore. Then they performed their final songs, ending the night with “Over The Sky”.

Overall, Dreamcatcher’s performance was everything that one could love about K-pop. The intimate venue, the constant curveballs that were thrown, and the sheer thrill of it all is something sacred that will forever be shared all those who attended that gig. Dreamcatcher is on a steady rise and from seeing how authentic the girls are with their passion for performance and fans, seems like it’s only onward and upward from here on.
