Now Vs Then: What These 4 Popular Spots In KL Used To Look Like

Many would argue that Kuala Lumpur has an excessive amount of shopping centres and skyscrapers, some of which are iconic. However, there was a time when these buildings did not exist.

Before they became historic and popular tourist destinations, there were once other prominent attractions where they now stand. Here are the things that used to occupy these areas:

1. Petronas Twin Towers

Source: BritishMalaya, Reddit

Did you know that the historic Petronas Twin Towers used to be a racehorse track? The Selangor Turf Club was first established in 1896 by colonial administrator, Sir William George Maxwell, long before independence, a time when Malaysia was still known as Malaya.

The club held its last racing event in 1992 before closing down to make way for the development of the Petronas Twin Towers. The racecourse is now located in the Sungai Besi recreation zone in Seri Kembangan.

2. Sungei Wang Plaza

Source: sungeiwang

Sungei Wang Plaza is known as the second oldest mall in Malaysia after Ampang Park Mall. Previously, the land used to be the home to Bukit Bintang (BB) Amusement Park. It was an entertainment hub in its prime, but sadly, things changed rapidly after the birth of television, radio and cinemas.

After the demolition of BB Park, construction of the Sungei Wang Plaza began in 1975, and it officially opened its doors to the public two years later in 1977. Today, the shopping centre is home to Mega Star Arena, where countless concerts are held throughout the year.

3. Berjaya Times Square

Source: Facebook/History InsightsMalaysia, BerjayaTimesSquare

When one thinks of Berjaya Times Square, the indoor theme park comes to mind. But before the mall and attraction were built, the land was originally the home of millionaire and philanthropist Cheong Yoke Choy before World War II. The house had a large lawn and was used as the Japanese military headquarters during the Japanese occupation. The land was later bought by the Berjaya Group of Tan Sri Vincent Tan for the development of what is now known as Berjaya Times Square.

4. Pavilion KL

Source: Threads/thosedaysmy, PavilionKL

Pavilion KL was originally the Bukit Bintang Girls’ School, founded in 1893. It was one of the oldest schools in Kuala Lumpur and aimed to provide education for girls at a time when female education was less common. The school played an important role in promoting gender equality. Before Pavilion KL opened in 2007, the school relocated to Cheras and was renamed Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Bintang Utara.

On 7th March 2025 (Friday), BLACKPINK (블랙핑크) member Jennie (제니) released her long-awaited studio album, “RUBY”. As such, she’s been busy promoting her album by participating in various YouTube content, including an interview with a guinea pig.

The LADBible YouTube channel recently released Jennie’s edition of their “The Most Relaxing Interview Ever” series. For the interview, the team has prepared various things to help the star relax while answering questions about herself.

SOURCES: INSTAGRAM (@ladbible)

One of the things the show prepared was a guinea pig named Carl for Jennie to cuddle during the interview. The adorable interactions between the idol and the furry animal quickly went viral on the platform and other social media.

However, one moment in the interview had many fans cracking up. Midway through the interview, Jennie noticed that the guinea pig had pooped on her – specifically her white bathrobe.

SOURCES: INSTAGRAM (@ladbible)

After confirming that the rodent did indeed excrete on her, the “MANTRA” singer had an amusing look on her face, trying to laugh off the incident. The interview then continues with the star getting a head massage while also giving Carl a message with a toothbrush.

Funnily enough, after the crew member took Carl away, Jennie noticed more droppings on her than before. When asked by the interviewer how much poop did Carl leave behind, the 29-year-old answered with a comical expression, “There’s a LOT!”. Many fans have reacted to the scene of Jennie getting pooped on by the guinea pig, mostly cracking up at her expressions.

SOURCES: TWITTER (@JennieDCGallery & @jnkloops) & INSTAGRAM (@ladbible)

Many fans felt sorry for Jennie for getting pooped on but can’t help but giggle at her adorable reactions. Some fans also joked that Carl must’ve had a vendetta against the stars. Others pointed out that getting pooped on is common when holding onto guinea pigs. However, there’s nothing to worry as many assured that guinea pig poop isn’t too dirty because it dries up quickly.

Besides cuddling Carl, Jennie also cuddled two puppies during the interview. Thankfully, the pups didn’t leave droppings on the idol – just lots of kisses. Watch the full interview and Jennie’s interactions with Carl below:

Malaysia’s aviation scene is about to see a major upgrade as we welcome the launch of Ascend Airways, a brand-new airline set to take off by the end of 2025! As a sister company to the UK-based Ascend Airways, the airline is backed by the Dublin-based Avia Solutions Group (ASG), renowned as the world’s largest Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) provider.

Currently, the airline is in the process of applying for an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and is awaiting permit approval from the Malaysian Aviation Commision. What are local and international passengers entitled to when flying with Ascend Airways? Here are some fun facts to get started!

Source: Ascend Airways

It’s Malaysia’s Newest B2B Airline!

Unlike traditional airlines, Ascend Airways won’t be selling tickets directly to passengers. Instead, it operates as a business-to-business solutions provider which provides ACMI services to other airlines, tour operators and even government agencies. This new airline aids in operating other companies’ flight schedules on their behalf during peak seasons to maximise revenue and meet consumer demands. Think of it as the ultimate “airline for airlines” that helps companies meet demand without the hassle of maintaining extra planes!

It’s Part Of A Global Aviation Powerhouse

Ascend Airways isn’t just flying solo, it is a part of the largest ACMI service provider, ASG, which manages over 200 aircraft across 6 continents. Offering world-class services which include ground handling, aircraft fleet operations and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). This means seasonal flexibility, allowing planes and crew to move between Malaysia and UK, meeting peak season demands while maintaining its efficiency and adaptability.

Flying Greener With New Boeing 737 Jets

Sustainability is a top priority for Ascend Airways, and the utilisation of the Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737 Max 8s are designed to be more sustainable due to lighter materials and fuel-efficient engines that reduce CO2 emissions by 20% and make a 50% less noise production compared to older models. That means a smaller environmental impact and a quieter, smoother flight experience!

With its focus on efficiency and sustainability, Ascend Airways is proving to be a game changer in Malaysia’s aviation industry. Ready to take off into the future? Keep your eyes peeled for updates on this world-class airline and fly with comfort with Malaysia’s newest airline!

Actor Kim Soo Hyun Accused Of Dating Late Actress Kim Sae Ron When She Was 15yo

The South Korean entertainment industry recently mourned the loss of Kim Sae-ron (김새론) at the age of 24 last month. However, the public attention hasn’t shifted and rumours regarding the cause of the actress’ passing still sparks controversy. Recently, serious allegations have emerged against the renowned actor Kim Soo-hyun (김수현), bringing up his relationship to the late actress.

The controversy began when Kim Sae Ron’s aunt appeared on the YouTube channel “Garosero Research Institute”, known for its contentious content. During her appearance, she alleged that Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron had been in a romantic relationship when Kim Sae Ron was 15 years old and Kim Soo Hyun was 27. She claimed that this relationship lasted six years, from 2015 to 2021.

Sources: Instagram @soohyun_k216 @ron_sae

Shockingly, the aunt accused Kim Soo Hyun of contributing to Kim Sae Ron’s tragic death, suggesting that his actions led to her suicide. According to the aunt, Kim Sae Ron joined Kim Soo Hyun’s management company, Gold Medalist, in 2019, to provide assistance in talent direction and acting lessons without compensation. The relationship reportedly ended following Kim Sae Ron’s involvement in a drunk driving incident in 2022.

The aunt alleged that Gold Medalist covered damages from the incident amounting to KRW700 million (approximately RM2,130,324) and insisted that Kim Sae Ron did not have to pay it back. However, the agency later demanded repayment, leading to financial and emotional distress for the late actress. The aunt claimed the sudden demand for repayment came as a shock to the actress, prompting her to attempt to contact the 37-year-old actor. However, all her efforts were unsuccessful.

Later on, while Kim Soo Hyun’s K-drama “Queen of Tears” was airing, Kim Sae Ron briefly posted a photo of the two on her Instagram, hoping to provoke a reaction from him to call her back. However, his agency swiftly denied all allegations, asserting that they had no contact with her. Interestingly, the YouTube channel also pointed out the fact that Kim Sae Ron took her own life on Kim Soo Hyun’s birthday (16th February 2025), implying that there may be a reason for choosing that date.

Source: Instagram @ron_sae

In response to these allegations, Gold Medalist issued an official statement, denying all claims made by “Garosero Research Institute”. The agency labelled the accusations as “malicious” and “entirely false,” stating that they cannot overlook such defamatory statements. They also expressed deep sorrow over Kim Sae Ron’s passing and mourning her loss.

The public’s reaction to these allegations has been mixed, with some expressing shock and others urging caution until all facts are verified. What do you think?

Malaysia continues to welcome some of Hong Kong’s biggest stars. Recently, some lucky fans met celebrity couple Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) and Grace Chan (陳凱琳) while dining at the popular nasi lemak eatery – but that’s not the only thing the couple did.

Recently, many XiaoHongShu users shared their experience meeting the two stars at the Village Park restaurant in Petaling Jaya. As seen in photos, the couple appeared dressed casually, with Kevin wearing a green polo shirt and Grace wearing a white button-down shirt. Some fans even took pictures with the couple, praising them for their good looks and humble personalities.

If you’re wondering, the couple have been in town for quite some time and seemed to have had a packed schedule while in KL. According to reports, Kevin and Grace attended the Body Perfect beauty spa opening ceremony in Sunway Pyramid. The couple also did a photoshoot and filmed a commercial while they were here. They also had their solo schedules to attend to, like Grace meeting up with some local content creators.

As for Kevin, one XiaoHongShu user revealed they met the actor and TVB actress Katy Kung at a restaurant. Another user said he met Kevin at M Vertica in Cheras, revealing that the 55-year-old was staying at one of the Airbnbs on the property. However, the same user revealed that Kevin’s assistant voiced interest in investing in local properties, prompting speculation that the actor might also try his hands in real estate investments.

She also mentioned that the laksa “motivated” her to wake up for a morning flight, indicating that the star had already returned home to Hong Kong.

It looks like Kevin and Grace had a busy few days while they were in town. The two stars, especially Grace, frequently visit Malaysia, so maybe we’ll see them in KL again soon!

Mixue Malaysia Responds To Alleged Racist Hiring Ad; Netizens Share Reactions

Hiring can be hard. Earlier this week, the MIXUE branch in Taman Sri Sinar put up a hiring ad, hoping to find a new staff. Unfortunately, it included wording that may be interpreted as exclusionary, immediately raising concern among the public.

To no one’s surprise, the “criteria: Malay and Chinese with experience” lit a sugary fire under the Malaysian online community. Despite the offending branch of MIXUE addressing the issue, could it be that the discussion unearthed a deeper crack in Malaysian society?

Source: Instagram @mophaneyy

Following the backlash, Mixue Malaysia released a statement to address the issue. The company clarified that the recruitment poster was put up by the individual branch’s management and doesn’t reflect the company’s official hiring policies. Mixue added, “Unfortunately, an error in their (Taman Sri Sinar Branch’s) hiring process led to misleading information.”. The branch have been instructed to remove the offending ad and follow provided guidance for future recruitment processes.

On the other hand, the Malaysian spirit and cynicism were on full display in the discourse that followed the issue. Some netizens were hyping each other up, and some critiquing the hiring culture and demanding change with their voice. Here’s what the netizens had to say about the issue:

Source: Instagram
Source: Facebook

Most of the comments pointed out the blatant racism from the branch’s management, noting that this isn’t a secluded issue. Some also brought up their own experience of facing discrimination while finding a job. However, some said these types of incidents will continue to happen unless the government take measures to prevent it.

This was definitely not an ideal way of getting some positive discussion and airing out the issues of Malaysian society. Who knew ice cream and tea could lead to this? In a statement, MIXUE insists that they “…respect diversity and are committed to fostering an open, inclusive, and welcoming environment for employees from all backgrounds. Any form of discrimination contradicts our core values and will not be tolerated.” What do you think?

6 Regional Ketupat Variations You Need To Try This Raya!

$

Hari Raya isn’t complete without ketupat, but did you know that different regions in Malaysia have their own unique takes on this festive staple?

Just like how rendang varies between states or how laksa has countless versions across the country, ketupat also comes in different shapes, textures, and flavours. From sweet to savoury, here are six types of ketupat you need to try this Raya.

1. Ketupat Nasi

No Hari Raya spread is complete without Ketupat Nasi, the most iconic version of ketupat. Made from compressed rice tightly packed into a woven coconut leaf casing, this dish is also known as nasi impit. The firm, compact texture of Ketupat Nasi allows it to soak up the rich flavours of festive dishes, making it a must-have at every open house.

It is commonly served with satay and kuah kacang (peanut sauce) or enjoyed alongside rendang, lodeh, and soto. Originating from Indonesia, it was introduced to the Malay Peninsula by a renowned theologian from Central Java, Sunan Kalijaga. Symbolically, the weaving process represents self-reflection, while the white rice inside signifies purity and freedom from sin.

2. Ketupat Palas

A staple in the East Coast states of Peninsular Malaysia like Terengganu, Kelantan, and Pahang, Ketupat Palas is made using glutinous rice wrapped in palas leaves. Unlike Ketupat Nasi, this version is rich, sticky, and often infused with coconut milk for extra flavour. In northern states like Kedah, it comes in two distinct styles: jantan (with an extra flap at the end, tied neatly) and betina (smaller, without an extra flap, and wrapped more loosely).

Some variations even include a sweet twist with fillings like red bean or black glutinous rice. If you haven’t tried this, you’re missing out on one of the creamiest ketupat versions around!

3. Ketupat Daun Pisang

Instead of coconut leaves, this variation is wrapped in banana leaves, giving it a softer, stickier texture with a subtle aroma. Also known as lontong, it is popular in Johor and parts of Indonesia.

It is commonly paired with lontong sayur (vegetable stew), satay, or even kuah kacang. The banana leaf wrapping gives it an earthy fragrance that sets it apart from other types of ketupat.

4. Burasak (Ketupat Borneo)

Popular among the Bugis community in Sabah and Johor, burasak is a festive must-have that is often mistaken for lepat pisang due to its similar shape. Made by steaming rice with coconut milk and wrapping it in nipah banana leaves, this ketupat has a slightly creamy taste.

It is typically served with ayam masak merah, ayam masak likku, and asam pedas ikan parang. If you ever get a chance to try Burasak, don’t pass it up – it’s a unique taste of Borneo!

5. Ketupat Bawang

As the name suggests, Ketupat Bawang is rounder and resembles an onion due to its distinctive weaving style. Unlike the diamond-shaped Ketupat Nasi, this version has a looser texture, making it easier to cut into cubes.

Though more commonly found in Indonesia, it is also enjoyed in parts of Malaysia and is often paired with rendang, kuah kacang, or other festive dishes. If you’re looking for something different yet familiar, this one’s worth a try!

6. Ketupat Sotong

If you love seafood, Ketupat Sotong (Sotong Sumbat) is a must-try! This East Coast specialty, particularly popular in Terengganu and Kelantan, takes ketupat to another level by stuffing squid with glutinous rice cooked in thick coconut milk.

The dish is then simmered in a rich, sweet coconut gravy – made with gula Melaka in Kelantan and gula batu or regular sugar in Terengganu. The result? A tender, flavourful dish that perfectly balances sweet and savoury notes. Though not traditionally served for Hari Raya, it remains a beloved delicacy in fishing villages where fresh squid is abundant.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Vans sneaker without the iconic gum waffle outsole, offering the same durability and grip that skateboarders and sneakerheads have trusted for decades. This foundation ensures comfort, stability, and timeless appeal.

The Vans Super Lowpro is now available for US$85 (~RM400) at Vans.com in Black, Green, Red, and White – grab your pair today and step into effortless style.
