In October 2014, the Twitter cookie community went into overdrive when a tweet surfaced suggesting that a new limited edition flavour of the world-famous Oreo cookies might be released. The original tweet was posted on 18th October but it has since been deleted. After which, a second tweet (directed at Oreo) followed, from a different user, which made a lot of people go, “Okay shite just got real. Is it real?”
In case you missed it, this is what was posted up (the second time):
Fun fact: Nabisco has to date released about 35 different variations of Oreo flavours since 2012.
However, the more discerning Oreo lovers were doubtful about the alleged “Red Velvet” flavour because fakes aren’t uncommon. Besides, time and time again we are told to never believe everything we read/see online, especially since some things can easily be altered or photoshopped. Let’s not forget that both “Butterbeer” and “Fried Chicken” flavoured Oreos have appeared in the past but of course, both were quickly proven to be fakes.
Some “notable” fakes here:
So it came as no surprise that people were quick to call the “Red Velvet” flavour out to potentially be fake as well.
But every great story has a great twist so here’s the thing: Starting 2nd February, the Red Velvet Oreo will be available to the masses, just in time for Valentine’s Day. You read right. It’s real, and it was verified by Oreo themselves:
According to The Verge, the 20-cookie package (less than the standard Oreo) will cost approximately USD4.50 and be available for about 6 – 8 weeks (aka “through Valentine’s Day and beyond”) or whenever supplies run out.
No idea if the above reddish chocolate cookie with cream cheese frosting goodness will make its way to Malaysia though. Keep your fingers crossed!
