Marvel and Disney may be taking over the world with its cinematic universe this year but mutants from the X-Men Universe are gearing up to take over the world in 2016 instead, with a sequel and 2 spin-off movies from the “X-Men” film franchise.
20th Century Fox recently announced the release dates for the movies they’ve scheduled through 2017. The announcement revealed that a X-Men spin-off film based on a popularised character, Gambit, will be released on 7th Oct 2016.
Gambit is a fictional character created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee for Marvel Comics. He was described as an incredibly knowledgeable mutant with the ability to mentally create, control, and manipulate pure kinetic energy to his every whim and desire. He often uses a bō for hand-to-hand combat and throw cards to track down his enemies.
Having appeared in a number of TV and video games, the character was brought to life by Taylor Kitsch in the 2009 film, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”. Due to the success of bringing the character to the big screen, Fox announced that a solo film based on Gambit is in development, with “22 Jump Steet” star Channing Tatum attached to play the lead role.
According to TheWrap, Tatum will also co-produce the film with his Free Association producing partner Reid Carolin. Screenwriter Josh Zetumer will pen the script of the film with longtime X-Men scribe Chris Claremont. Simon Kinberg and Donner, the producers of “X-Men: Days of Future Past” will produce the solo film.
“Gambit” is the second X-Men spin-off film to be released in 2016 as another X-Men spin-off film “Deadpool” (starring Ryan Reynolds) is slated for release on 12th Feb the same year, before the release of the sequel for “X-Men: Apocalypse“.
Other than the X-Men Cinematic Universe, 2016 will consist of the live-action adaptation of a popular video game, “Assassin’s Creed“. Starring Michael Fassbender, “Assassin’s Creed” will be released on 21st Dec 2016 before the release of Hugh Jackman‘s P.T. Barnum movie “The Greatest Showman on Earth” on Christmas Day.
A comedy “Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates” is slotted to be released in 2016 as well, and TheWrap is reporting that Fox is expecting it to be a popular summer comedy. It is taking over the date previously occupied by the untitled “Planet of the Apes” sequel.
The new “Planet of the Apes” movie takes over the old release date of the sequel to the “The Fantastic Four” reboot as it is set to hit theatres on 14th July 2017. “The Fantastic Four 2″ is now scheduled for release on 2nd June 2017. Before the release of both films, “The Mountain Between Us”, a romantic drama film helmed by Hany Abu-Assad is coming before Valentine’s Day on 10th Feb 2017. Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike (of “Gone Girl” fame) are expected to star in the film.
