“We need to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, work. Or waffles, friends, work. Doesn’t matter, but work is third.'”

If you’ve watched NBC’s comedy TV series “Parks and Recreation”, then you would know about Leslie Knope’s (played by Amy Poehler) obsession with waffles, preferably with extra whipped cream on it. Well, her waffle obsession has begun to take effect on us because we’ve been craving for waffles since forever! In fact, why would anybody ever eat anything else other than breakfast food?

So, we began our waffle hunt to search high and low for the best waffles in town and believe it or not, you can get waffles just about everywhere or make one yourself if you have a waffle maker in your kitchen!

Feeling hungry now? This post we’re about to show you is going to make you cry for food:

1. LewisGene | espresso, tea & machines

For some, the waffles at LewisGene are hands-down the best waffles in town but others may argue that you can get better waffles elsewhere. We’ve taken a liking to the waffles on LewisGene because the cafe offers both savoury and sweet waffles for us to choose from. Our favourite? Denitely the chocolate chip waffles – and yes, there are chocolate chips in the waffle too! If you’ve noticed, the presentation of the waffles (especially for the Belgian waffles) is one of the major plus points that keep us coming back for more Instagram-worthy shots. But overall, it is a great place to chill on a Sunday afternoon as the cafe exudes a peaceful and laid-back atmosphere.

  • Location: Lot 2-1 (first floor), Jalan Solaris 3, Solaris Mont Kiara, 50480 Kuala Lumpur.

Boy, oh boy. Leslie and Ron are going to love this. Because what’s better than waffles and bacon? BBC Waffles! And what’s BBC Waffles? Oh, you know, just one of the cafe’s signature dishes that comes with crispy pork bacon strips, sliced bananas, and Fatbaby cornflakes ice cream.

Sounds heavenly good, right? That’s because it is the ultimate breakfast food! Some may find it the ice-cream addition (to bacon) a little strange having tried some unique-flavoured ice cream in these awesome ice cream places, we don’t mind it at all as long as they taste good! Don’t say we didn’t share but for those who are planning to visit the cafe, you should know that the signature BBC Waffles wouldn’t be as fluffy as you’d like them to be. But! Once you sink your teeth in ‘em crunchy waffles, you’d find that it’s a completely different texture as it’s much softer than you’d expect it to be!

  • Location: 26, Jalan SS2 / 103. 47300 Petaling Jaya.
  • Opening hours: Tues-Sun, 11:00 – 23:00

3. Kaffeine

Oh, so you think a plain old waffle topped with maple syrup or whipped cream would be sufficient to satisfy you? Well, think again. We always love being a little adventurous so that we can get out of our comfort zone and try some truly unique waffles. Kaffeine is one such example that plays around with the idea of putting a fresh twist to their waffles.

A little obsessed with Korean culture or more specifically, Korean food? Try their kimchi waffles! But how about those who are obsessed with Japanese culture? No worries because the chicken ham and fresh cabbage waffle is served with mozzarella and cheddar cheese as well as takoyaki mayonnaise sauce. Rest assured though, original waffles topped with peanut butter or maple syrup are served at Kaffeine too.

4. Thirdwave

There’s no denying that third wave coffee movement in Malaysia is growing as more and more people are willing to pay a little extra for nicely-brewed coffee. But for now, we want you to forget about the third wave coffee movement because it seems like waffles are slowly and steadily becoming a trend in our country.

No, it’s not a third wave waffles movement but Thirdwave is one of the coffee shops that has jumped onto the bandwagon by including waffles into their extensive menu. While there’s nothing truly special about the waffles at Thirdwave, we love that the waffles are topped with sliced bananas, fresh berries, and most importantly, New Zealand’s iconic Kapiti vanilla ice cream!

  • Location: Unit 1-11, Level 1, Nexus, Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur.
  • Opening hours: Daily, 10am-10pm.

5. The Point

Buttermilk waffles, ’nuff said. Because let’s be honest, we wouldn’t be so happily eating our waffles if it weren’t for buttermilk. Despite being less crispy than usual, buttermilk waffles have always been extremely crowd-pleasing at The Point. The fragrant lingers in our mouth that make us crave for more!

Sure, the price may be a little too high for the waffles but it’s worth it for a huge waffle that can be shared between 2 or even 3 people? On top of that, it comes with 2 huge scoops of ice cream, topped off with resh berries and sliced bananas! Hands down a winner.

  • Location: No. 122, First & Second Floor, Jalan Kasah, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur
  • Opening hours: Brunch served – Wednesdays-Saturdays, 11:30am-2:30pm | Dinner served – Mondays-Saturdays, 5pm through late

6. The Library Coffee Bar

As compared to the waffles we’ve tasted before, we find that the waffles at The Library Coffee Bar aren’t as crunchy as the rest. But again, all waffles are good waffles and it’s all very subjective as some people may prefer the warm and fluffy ones instead of the crunchy and crispy ones.

Similar to LewisGene, The Library Coffee Bar serves savoury waffles and you can choose to pair it with bacon or creamy scrambled eggs and smoked salmon slices. If you asked us, we still prefer their sweet waffles that comes with either whipped cream or ice cream on top. Extra toppings such as blueberries and bananas can be added on top of the waffles as well.

The Library Coffee Bar has opened its outlets at various locations including:

  • Avenue K, KL: Lot G-8B, Ground Floor, Avenue K, 156 Jalan Ampang, 50450 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • Nexus Bangsar South: G-2A, Ground Floor, Nexus Bangsar South, No.7, Jalan Kerinchi, Kuala Lumpur.

7. La Hagen

Well, believe it or not, Standing Theory isn’t the only place that serves waffles with bacon because La Hagen at 1 Mont Kiara in KL has included pork bacon strips on their waffles too! La Hagen was once Hagen Bake & Crew, one of the most famous bakeries located in Mont Kiara. After putting an end to their baking business, Hagen Bake & Brew changed its name to La Hagen to become a restaurant that primarily serves pork dishes from grilled meats to pasta to pizza. However, one should not simply skip the dessert section of the menu as they have so much to offer.

For those who aren’t too keen to try the waffles with bacon on it, there are ordinary waffles that are topped with vanilla ice cream and flower-shaped strawberry available in the menu as well. You may also add some sunshine to the dreariest of days with our combination of fresh bananas on waffles with lashings of chocolate sauce, whipped cream and coated peanuts!

8. Whimsical Gelateria & Caffe by Cielo Dolci

After impressing us with their unique gelato flavours, we just can’t get The Whimsical Gelateria and Caffe off our mind because we simply want to try their everything on their menu! Operated by the owners of Cielo Dolci, Whimsical Gelateria & Caffe is a cafe that serves most of their food especially their creative breakfast set with their unique gelato flavours.

By creative breakfast set, we mean the cafe has replaced muffins and buns with savoury waffles instead for their burgers and Eggs Benedict. Thus, a waffle burger is born! Topped with Hollandaise sauce and smoked salmon, the Eggs Benedict goes surprisingly well with waffles. Savoury waffles aren’t the only option though as the sweet waffles are made available at the cafe as well.

Patrons who are planning to visit the cafe should definitely visit during brunch hour as they have an extensive breakfast selection to choose from. The breakfast set is made available until 5pm only.
