Actress Michelle Yeoh, who has been heavily criticised by netizens for attending a political banquet, has defended her decision to openly support Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Initially, netizens claimed that Michelle was only pretending to “fight oppressive governments” while playing as Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi in the film The Lady, but “fights the suffering people” when off camera. Some even branded her a “traitor” and told her to never come home. A Facebook page supporting the Malaysian opposition drew more than one thousand comments condemning the actress and calling her a government stooge.
However, in her defense, Michelle Yeoh has stepped forward to urge netizens and her fans not to judge her negatively. She reportedly said:
This is a democratic country. We’re all free to voice our opinions. I think people shouldn’t be personal. I think all of us want to do good for our own country. And I believe they want to do the same thing.
