First there was GLEE, and then there was Steven Spielberg’s “Smash”. You think the bubblegummy musical TV series/movies would eventually run out of “fuel” but no, they’re not ready to quit just yet.

This year’s story is based on Mickey Rapkin’s non-fiction novel, “Pitch Perfect”.

Mickey Rapkin is a senior editor at GQ magazine who worked extensively on making his novel perfect. He spent an entire season covering competitive collegiate a cappella which includes a lot of “following around” and stalking. Mickey followed the groups from Tufts Universtiry, the University of Oregon, ahd the University of Virginia, writing about the singing, groupies, partying, and rivalries.

Then, ta-dah! He has a story!

The film follows the story of Beca (played by Anna Kendrick), a freshman at Barden University, who is cajoled into joining “The Bellas” – as apt as it is for an all-girls singing group. The group rebuild so that they can take on the boys aka male rivals. Oh, and more important, so that they make their way into and win the championship held at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall.

Of course, as we would expect, there’s no one better than the fresh insights from new girl Beca to turn old school into new school. She takes this acoustic singing group out of their world of tradition and conservativeness and into all-new mash-ups.

Yup. Beca is determined to revamp the set-list so that it includes music that’s more up to date:

So electrifying! And Anna Kendrick can sing? Really? We’ll find out with Pitch Perfect is released in a cinema near us some time in November 2012!
