Robin Thicke looks to blow our minds.
It looks like “Give It To You” singer is aiming for another hit off blockbuster collaboration by teaming up with “Super Bass” rapper Nicki Minaj and producer Max Martin for a dance floor banger, “Back Together”.
Unlike 2013, hit song “Blurred Lines” a collaborative project with Pharrell and T.I. which was a pastiche of mid-Seventies R&B, “Back Together” boasts a bumping disco beat and buzzsaw synths similar to the electro-pop surge led by Justice and Daft Punk.
Sounding as soulful as ever, Robin smoothly croons over Martin’s catchy production. Meanwhile, Nicki leaves a trail of fun and brings attitude to the song, despite her rather brief appearance. A fun and addictive track, “Back Together” could be a turning point for Robin after “Blurred Lines”, his first #1 song faced a fierce backlash.
Amidst claims that the song promoted rape culture, Robin together with Pharrell and T.I. were successfully sued by the estate of Marvin Gaye, who claimed that the song ripped off “Got To Give It Up”.
“Back Together” follows the previously released track, “Morning Sun”, also tentatively the title of Robin’s new album. The LP is expected to be released this year.
