CL of 2NE1 made history by giving fans a taste of her upcoming US solo album through a new collaboration track with Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Diplo as well as hip hop acts RiFF RAFF and OG Maco.
Titled “Dr. Pepper”, the song has been in the works since last year as a short snippet of it was teased through Diplo’s Snapchat.
“Diplo cancelled a session on me, and I was so mad at him. I was drinking a can of Dr. Pepper and wrote the song so I could go home as soon as possible, Diplo ended up loving it!” CL told The Fader, explaining how the song came about.
CL previously teamed up with Diplo for 2014 Style Icon Awards in Seoul. She also made a surprise appearance during Jack Ü‘s set at 2015 UMF Miami to perform “Dirty Vibe”, a single from Skrillex’s 2014 album, “Recess”.
Regarding the collaboration, Diplo said:
CL and I go back a long way, from the first time YG contacted me about 6 years ago. I ended up being in the video for Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now” and I met G-Dragon and T.O.P (of BIGBANG). I worked with them before I knew what K-pop was, to be honest.
He further added:
I’ve been active in CL’s first full-length album, mostly trying to find a right balance between glossy K-pop attitude and keeping CL positioned where she belongs—as the baddest coolest female out right now. “Dr. Pepper” is something that might not register that well with actual K-pop, seeing as it’s a straight Atlanta-style rap record, but the net around K-pop is so wide that it can be anything with confidence and style. Thats what CL brings to it.
Other than Diplo, CL is also working closely with a number of producers and artistes including Taboo of Black Eyed Peas and Florence + The Machine. American talent manager Scooter Braun is managing CL’s debut as a solo artiste in America.
