Get your weapons ready, guys. It looks like a new bunch of zombies will come running after us in an upcoming sequel of “World War Z“.

TheWrap’s reporter Jeff Sneider broke the news that the sequel will be released on 9th June 2017.

Released in 2013, “World War Z” is an American apocalyptic action horror film directed by German-Swiss filmmaker Marc Forster (“Stranger Than Fiction”, “Finding Neverland”). Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, and Damon Lindelof wrote the screenplay from a screen story by Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski, based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks.

The movie stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator who must travel the world to find a way to stop a zombie pandemic. Despite being criticised for “the anti-climax and outdated CGI”, it received generally positive reviews from critics and fans alike for its “realistic revival of the zombie genre”. It became the highest-grossing zombie film of all time for grossing over $540 million against a production budget of $190 million.

World War Z Review

Due its massive box office success, a sequel was announced shortly after the film’s release.

The studio hired director Steven Knight to write the sequel while “The Impossible” director Juan Antonio Bayona is attached to helm the project. Co-financed by Skydance, the movie will be produced by Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dede Gardner via their Plan B Entertainment banner. Pitt will also return to star as the main protagonist.

The plot details have been kept under wraps, but Knight told Thompson on Hollywood that the sequel will start off with a “clean slate”.
