It seems likes the force is still going strong in the “Star Wars” franchise as Vanity Fair recently gave us a first look at the new characters in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.
In celebration of the Star Wars Day on 4th May, Vanity Fair released the behind-the-scenes photos to give us a glimpse of what to expect from the June issue of the print magazine. The cover image was photographed by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, who visited the film set last year.
Among the new pictures, one of them showed that Adam Driver is indeed going to portray Kylo Ren, a new villain who wields the much-discussed “tri-saber”. However, no details regarding his role were further revealed.
“12 Years a Slave” star Lupita Nyong’o will play a character named Maz Katana, which will be brought to life using CGI based on her performance capture work. Her character is a pirate with no allegiances to either the Resistance (aka the Rebel Alliance) or the First Order (the new Empire). It was rumoured that she was in possession of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber.
Gwendoline Christie, who is best known for her role as Brienne of Tarth in “Game of Thrones“, will portray Captain Phasma, aka the chrome Stormtrooper.

The official synopsis of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has yet to be released, but the story is set around 30 years after the events of 1983’s “Return of the Jedi”. Oscar Isaac is joining the film to portray Poe Dameron, an elite pilot who has been sent on a mission.
More photos and details regarding the franchise are available at Vanity Fair’s website. Meanwhile, you can check out the behind-the-scenes video below:
