In one week since its 2nd April opening in the country, “Fast & Furious 7″ aka “Furious 7” broke every box office record in Malaysia, on top of destroying box office records worldwide.
The film’s weekend opening charted at #1 and became the “Biggest Film Opening of All-Time” in Malaysian cinematic history, beating out previous record holders “Transformers: Age of Extinction” and “Iron Man 3“.
In just one week, “Furious 7″ has already grossed more than the entire lifetime ticket sales of films such as:
- Avatar
- X-Men: Days of Future Past
- G.I. Joe Retaliation
The film also broke the #1 record of the “Biggest Single Day Collection” at the box office, previously held by “Transformers: Age of Extinction“.
Upon the announcement, United International Pictures Malaysia’s Managing Director Nicholas Yong said:
While we realise that the fan base for the Fast & Furious franchise is extremely strong in this country, we are just bowled over by the outstanding results. Turbo-boosted by the excellent word-of-mouth, local audiences really responded to the theme of family-ties, humour and the great over-the-top action. The film being directed by Malaysian-born director, James Wan (who did a fabulous job on “The Conjuring”), and the fact that this is Paul Walker’s last film, were added must-see elements for local movie-goers.
“Furious 7″ is currently showing in cinemas nationwide in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D.
