So long, long-haired Leto and hello, The Joker!

It’s a heartbreaking day for those who are fond of Jared Leto‘s glorious long hair as the Thirty Seconds to Mars’ frontman finally cut off his hair for his role in David Ayer’s upcoming DC Comics film “Suicide Squad“. Leto debuted his new look through David Ayer’s Twitter account, as the director earlier promised to offer his fans a bigger, better surprise with the following tweet:

Produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, “Suicide Squad” is executive produced by Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson, and Geoff Johns. The film is based on the original DC Comic of the same name, where a group of supervillains find themselves going on a most unlikely mission for a shot at redemption. However, the mission will probably kill them all.

“Fury” director David Ayer is set to direct the film, based on Justin Marks’ screenplay.

Since the production is set to begin in April, it came as no surprise to us that the director has already started to tease fans about the film. It is currently being fast-tracked at the studio so that the film will be ready to make its debut in 2016.

After Ayer teased a big revelation, Leto chimed in and teased his new look with the following tweet:

If this tweet is an indication of something new, then make no doubt about it: We are finally getting our first look at Jared Leto as The Joker.

The anticipation was made in the past 24 hours because Leto is set to be the first person to play the character in a film since the late Heath Ledger in 2008′s “The Dark Knight.”. Some of us let out a sigh of relief because his new look would be a good riddance of his shaggy long hair and beard too. It’s easy to imagine how he’d look like in his short hair though. Long before Leto decided to grow his hair and beard, he had gone through a dynamic hair evolution that ranged from questionable to memorable to swooning.

But when David Ayer posted the following the image, the immense pain we felt for Leto was rather huge because we knew exactly how it feels to have your hair cut in just a snap:

During an interview with Billboard, Leto talked about his diet in preparation for the role. “Do you mind if I eat a little?” Jared Leto asked before diving into his vegans. “I’m trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours – and I’m terrible at eating a lot.

When the interviewer asked Leto why he agreed to take the role, he referred to the character as a “nearly Shakespearean character” and a “beautiful disaster”.

His diet has led to some speculations that Ayer’s version of The Joker might be noticeably more muscular, taking design cues from Frank Miller’s “All-Star Batman and Robin” title.

So, when Ayer was asked to describe Jared Leto’s role in one word, he said it’d be “majestic“. How majestic is it going to be? We don’t know. However, our first look at Leto as the Joker has finally been revealed.

Check out Leto’s clean-shaven look in the tweet below:

This picture is still a tease for us because Ayer tweeted the picture in black and white. Why did Leto cover his right eye, anyway? Was he trying to hide something from us? Plus, we still have no idea whether his hair has been coloured green for his portrayal on the Clown Prince of Crime. Hopefully, Ayer and the cast will continue to provide updates from the film set, especially when they don their respective costumes.

Slated for release on 5th August 2016, “Suicide Squad” stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, and Cara Delevigne as Enchantress. Before flexing their criminal muscles in the movie, Smith and Robbie teamed up as a pair of con-artists in Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s “Focus“.
