Taiwanese American DJ/producer Shogun (real name Andrew Chen) is no stranger to the dance music scene in Malaysia, having made his mark several times at Zouk Club Kuala Lumpur previously. The last time we saw him, we rode through an “UFO”-ric high as he took us on a journey with his blooming mesh of splashy synths and pulsating buildups.
And now, fresh out of the studio, having finally pushed out his debut album, this globetrotting DJ’s next gig on our homeground could turn out to be quite interesting!
It was in 2002 that Andrew Chen remembers going to a friend’s house and listening to Armin van Buuren’s album “Communication”. The sound lent itself to his natural affinity for Nine Inch Nails and Filter, bands who incorporate electronic elements into their music. Chen began to discover more trance music and eventually started playing local clubs before catching his break at the Ministry of Sound in Taiwan, where he spent 2 years as the resident DJ.
After his stint in Taipei, he returned to the States to study audio engineering in Hollywood. Hiding in the studio to hone his craft, Chen made about 200 tracks over the course of 3 years, with his first single signed by Armin van Buuren’s S107/Armada record label.
Garnering attention from Armin van Buuren’s international radio show, “A State of Trance”, as well Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, and Above & Beyond, before he knew it, tracks such as “Imprisoned” became his ticket to world travel on the dance-club circuit.
Today, Shogun is the first Asian American on the internationally known S107/Armada Record Label and performs at the biggest festivals and clubs around the world. There hasn’t been a track of his in the past year that’s not landed in the Beatport Trance Top 10 – originals “UFO”, “Amplify”, “Lotus”, and his remix of BT, Arty & Nadia Ali’s “Must Be The Love” have all smashed the charts and sets of the world’s top trance DJs.
And as mentioned, more recently, he released his debut album, “Dragon”, something that has been 4 years in the making and it comes packed with 10 impressive tracks.
Among his most notable gigs in 2012 was a trip to ASOT550 at Beyond Wonderland in Los Angeles, where he learned that EDM and wet weather doesn’t always spell disaster. Playing a set onstage in the pouring rain, then getting sick for a month afterward would’ve bummed a lot of DJs out. But for an EDM warrior playing in front of a massive crowd, taking a risk in the face of glory is always worth it.
