Long before Fox announced that Michael Fassbender will star in The New Regency and Ubisoft adaptation of “Assassin’s Creed,” the principal photography for the “X-Men” franchise star’s upcoming British drama film, “Macbeth” begun on 6th February 2014 in Scotland.

Now, it looks like “Assassin’s Creed” has turned into a Macbeth reunion for Fassbender as his co-star in the film, Marion Cotillard is going to star in the live-action adaptation of the famed video game too.

Best known for her Oscar-winning role in “La Vie En Rose” and her action role in “The Dark Knight Rises“, Cotillard is reuniting with Michael Fassbender and “Macbeth” director Justin Kurzel to star in Kurzel’s adaptation of “Assassin’s Creed”. Justin Kurzel’s take on Shakespeare’s Scottish play stars Cotillard and Fassbender as the scheming, murderous main couple and the movie is slated for release later this year.

The New Regency and Ubisoft kept mum about Cotillard’s role in “Assassin’s Creed” but she will appear in multiple films if the first one managed to spawn a franchise. As for Fassbender, he is attached to play an everyman who is kidnapped by a mysterious organisation to relive the memories of his assassin ancestors as the organisation attempts to recover a powerful, sacred artefact.

Assassin's Creed

According to Deadline, Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed” is a big-selling video game that has sold over 91 million units in the world. Together with The New Regency, the adaptation has the same formula that helped Marvel to build its money-making franchises. Co-financed by RatPac and Alpha Picture, the production will begin in early fall before its release on 21st December 2016.

Fassbender will produce the movie alongside Frank Marshall, Arnon Milchan, Jean-Julien Baronnet, Conor McCaughan, and Pat Crowley while Bill Collage, Adam Cooper and Michael Lesslie will pen the script.

Cotillard is currently up for an Academy Award for her role in 2014 Belgian-French-Italian drama film, “Two Days, One Night”. She will be seen next in an oratorio of Jeanne Au Bucher and Nicole Garcia’s Mal de Pierres.
