Samara’s cursed video tape is still being passed around Hollywood as Paramount Pictures is currently developing a 3rd “Ring” film.
Unfortunately, Naomi Watts, the female lead of the 2nd “Ring” film will not return to reprise her role in the film franchise because the studios has just found their new female lead for the 3rd film.
Multiple sources have told TheWrap that Italian actress Matilda Lutz is joining the threequel of the famed horror film as the female lead. 2002’s “The Ring” is a American remake of the 1998 Japanese film “Ringu” and its threeqeul serves as the next chapter of the popular “Ring” franchise. The 3rd film is also the sequel to 2005’s “The Ring 2″, with the storyline continuing from the 2005 film.
Director Hideo Nakata, director of the original Japanese film “Ringu”, will not return to helm the American psychological horror film but Paramount Pictures has hired Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutierrez to direct the threequel. A month ago, he also shared an update on the film, announcing the 3rd film is officially titled “Rings” and will be released in 2015.
Francisco Javier Gutiérrez Díaz is best known for his short film “Brasil and Norman’s Room” and his movie “Before the Fall”. He is considered as one of the most awarded and lauded fantasy genre filmmakers in Spain. “Rings” will mark his 2nd studio genre franchise after Relativity and The Weinstein Co. tapped him to reboot “The Crow”.
He also serves as an executive producer for James Wan’s 2015 horror film “Demonic”.
Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing the horror film while Akiva Goldsman is writing the 3rd draft of the screenplay written by David Loucka and Jacon Aaron Estes, based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki.
The first two “Ring” movies received mixed reviews from the critics and both of them grossed more than USD400 million worldwide.
“Rings” will mark Matilda Lutz’s American debut as she only has a recurring role in the Italian comedy series “Fuoriclasse” and was previously featured in “The Fifth Wheel” and “Someone Beautiful”. She is also set to appear in 2 other Italian films but both films are currently in post-production stage.
The release date for “Rings” has not been announced yet but it is expected to arrive in 2015.
