In the past, we’ve featured cafes of sorts, from the pet-friendly ones to the kickass Korean cafes that we absolutely adore – even the ones that allow you to pore over choices of board games. You could say that in our spare time, we’re either parking our butts at the said cafes for hours on end or looking for more cafes to park out butts at for hours on end, because we’re coffee addicts like that.

Recently, it has come to our attention that various cafes (some hidden, some not-so-hidden) with really unique names and equally unique concepts to boot have mushroomed all over Klang Valley. Check ‘em out:

LOKL (pronounced as “Local”) Coffee Co

Housed in a bright airy space with an internal courtyard that’s shared with BackHome Hostel, LOKL Coffee Co is a neighbourhood cafe in the historic heart of Kuala Lumpur that serves espressos and local coffee, hot and hearty sandwiches with a local twist, as well as cakes and pastries. While it’s a great place to hide out and binge on coffee, the “star” of LOKL Coffee Co’s “show” is perhaps their popular Hainanese meatloaf. The cafe also has in-house desserts with a playful twist i.e. their Putumayam toastie (how much more local can you get?), and they keep things interesting by updating their menu every week!

“Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any wool?”

At 3 Bags Full, coffee is their passion and food is their expertise. They serve among the best coffee you can find as they continuously source, import, roast the best and freshest beans. Besides coffee, 3 Bags Full also brings you the freshest produce and a wide variety of dishes (Brunch food? Sizzling walnut brownie with double chocolate gelato and peanut butter sauce? Lorem Ipsum

Otherwise more popularly known as blind/filler text, Lorem Ipsum is a cafe that hidden above a dental clinic along Jalan Bangkung in Bangsar. So hidden, the cafe doesn’t even have a signage. Unlike other cafes, this one embodies a “brewing and jamming” concept because it supplies easels, canvases, and art supplies for patrons to paint with. On top of that, the food selection on Lorem Ipsum’s menu is sourced from local independent entrepreneurs, ranging from quiches to tarts, and even ice-cream.

CAFFEine;

Make no mistake, that semicolon really exists in CAFFEine;’s name, which makes it that much more unique. CAFFEine; prides itself in being an indie cafe that’s both a place for coffee lovers as well as an escape from home and the workplace. Striving to serve only the finest drinks, their beverages range from coffee to gourmet loose tea, to premium chocolate as well as smoothies, bottled beverages, and premium chocolate drinks. On top of that, they also serve sandwiches and cakes so you’ll never go hungry while “wasting” hours away.

Dr. Inc Cafe (pronounced as “Drink”)

Dr. Inc Cafe is undoubtedly the latest addition to Kuala Lumpur’s booming coffee shop curiosity. Tucked away in a peaceful, leafy corner of Bangsar, this quaint hideaway café provides an afterwork retreat or a quick weekend “getaway” while surrounded by the unique artwork and handicrafts of design shopfront, nala. Their mantra? “Drink at ease”. Dr. Inc Cafe serves traditional Italian dark roast coffee; a variety of fresh-pressed juices; bottled beers, ciders, retro soda pops, and light meals.

VCR

The owners, they call themselves the coffee explorers. So it’s no surprise that coffee lovers (like ourselves) have once or twice referred to them as one of the best coffee places in Kuala Lumpur. Painted mysteriously in black, VCR is tucked behind a foliage of apartments and old shophouses, not too far away from Berjaya Times Square. If not for the ambience, people usually flock to VCR for their selection of freshly brewed coffee and cakes e.g. “The King”, “Lemon Poppy Seed”. They don’t serve meals though but that’s okay for those of us who want to just kick back, “lepak”, and smell the coffee for hours on end.

VCR is located at 2 Jalan Galloway 50150 Kuala Lumpur.
