Spider-Man will not show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after all, but it was revealed that both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have previously discussed about having Spidey in “Captain America: Civil War“.
Following the recent hack on Sony Pictures, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Marvel and Sony have had a discussion about teaming up for an animated Spider-Man comedy and Spidey crossover in Marvel’s films.
WSJ obtained the leaked information about the crossover through the hacked email correspondences involving Sony motion picture chief Amy Pascal and Disney CEO Bob Iger. The email correspondence also included Sony CEO Kaz Hirai.
According to The Journal, on October 30th, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad sent an email to Amy Pascal and tell her about “a potential scenario that would see Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains creative control, marketing and distribution”. Pascal later sent another email to a business partner that “Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in its planned third “Captain America” movie“.
The rumours about the potential crossover were spreading like wildfire in recent months as some Marvel fans have always wanted Marvel to bring Spider-Man back to its studio. The demand came after the mixed reviews about “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and its underwhelming performance at the box office. It is also logical to include Spider-Man in the “Civil War” film as the masked hero plays a key role in the comic-book version of “Captain America: Civil War”.
However, the talks with Marvel eventually broke down. Sony is now planning to go ahead with releasing its own Spider-Man slate, scheduling the next Spider-Man film for 2016 and a spin-off film in 2018.
It was revealed that the executives will hold a “Spider summit” in January 2015 to discuss future movie plans. The plans include an animated Spider-Man comedy (by “The Lego Movie” producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord), a female-centric film, and 2 spin-off films focusing on Sinister Six and Venom.
The crossover may not be happening now, but still, both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have not announced the major news yet. Perhaps Spidey will reunite with Marvel in the near future.
