We wouldn’t be crying tears of joy now if Japanese film production company, Toho Co. didn’t announce that another Godzilla film will be released soon. And no, we are not talking about Legendary Pictures’ version of Godzilla. We are talking about the original Godzilla film series that was created by Toho Co.!
Yuh huh, Godzilla will finally return to its roots in Japan as the original creator of the film series is set to produce its first Godzilla film since 2004.
First appeared in 1954’s “Godzilla” film, the King of the Monsters is the leading role in 28 films produced by Toho Co. The success in the film series has led Godzilla to becoming a worldwide pop culture icon that has appeared in other forms of media including video games, comic books, TV series, and novels. Godzilla is often portrayed as a danger to humanity (a metaphor for nuclear weapons) but some stories portrayed it as a hero that saves the humanity from other destructive monsters.
In the reboot version of the classic Godzilla film produced, Legendary Pictures portrayed Godzilla as a hero that has saved them from another monster that was featured in the film.
Following the box office success of the reboot version of “Godzilla” film, Toho Co. announced the studio will produce a domestic version (Japanese version) of Godzilla film by 2016.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Toho staffer said that it’s about time for Toho to produce yet another “Godzilla” film. He said:
This is very good timing after the success of the American version this year: if not now, then when? The licensing contract we have with Legendary places no restrictions on us making domestic versions
Set to be the 29th installment of Toho’s “Godzilla” film series, the upcoming “Godzilla” film will begin its production in summer of 2015. The film is aimed at the global market but no director and cast is officially attached to the film yet. The studio has told The Hollywood Reporter that the budget has not been decided yet but there is definitely an advancement in its CGI effect, allowing the film to stand alongside Hollywood-sized productions.
Alongside the announcement, Toho also announced that a Godzilla Strategic Conference (Godzi-Con) will be launched for executives and directors, which may suggest that the studio is planning to create a new Godzilla series. However, the plan has not been confirmed by the studio yet.
While everything still kept under wraps, it is confirmed that a sequel to Legendary’s “Godzilla” film is slated for release in 2018.
