As it is, photo sharing service and social media platform Instagram is known to block a whole bunch of searches from its users. While you’re free to add any hashtags or any combinations of hashtags (as long as they’re below 30 per Instagram post), it doesn’t mean that these hashtags register on the search.
Searches like #proanorexia and #thinspiration have been blocked to protect users, as well as searches on hashtags that may contain pornographic content such as #porn and #ass.
Of course, blocking foul language hashtags is also common, as Instagram has a set of community guidelines to follow by. If you haven’t read it, it basically states what you, as an Instagram user, can or can not do, ranging from how you should treat other users to caution to those who share photos and videos of mature content or illegal content e.g. firearms, drugs, adult products, etc.
There’s also a line stating how you cannot promote or glorify self-harm in any way, which more or less explains why hashtags like #proanorexia, #thinspiration, and #probulimia have been effectively taken off the search. Funnily, the banned list of hashtags also includes seemingly harmless hashtags such as #photography, #iphone, and #instagram. Or even something as harmless as #ilovemyinstagram.
Why, you ask?
Instagram co-founder, Mike Krieger, addressed the issue in a post on the Instagram API Developer Google Group, stating that Instagram block searches on several high volume hashtags that add little value: “We’ve stopped serving feeds (both in app and API) for some tags that were too generic and didn’t provide enough end-user value.”
The list will keep changing with the times, of course, because people can always come up with variations of words/hashtags to sneak pass the ban. For now, here’s the list of banned hashtags/searches on Instagram:

Important: If any of the above hashtags are in your combination of hashtags in a caption for your post, it will corrupt your post. Which means that it’ll keep all other relevant and unbanned hashtags in your caption from working. So it’s good to keep that in mind!
