By now you would’ve heard that Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Asia’s recent launch of Comedy Central HD on HyppTV has went on-air on 1st September.

And with it came the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning, animated series, South Park! Yes, “One of the All-Time Greatest TV Shows” (as coined by Entertainment Weekly), has finally made its way to Malaysia via Comedy Central HD on HyppTV’s VOD Channel 851! Oh, you know the one, created by comic geniuses Trey Parker and Matt Stone, features the breathtakingly irreverent and ruthlessly funny misadventures of 4 foul-mouthed, troublemaking young boys in a small town nestled in the Colorado Rockies.

Here are 10 interesting facts about South Park:

1. How it all started: Trey Parker and Matt Stone were attending University of Colorado together in 1992 and made a stop motion video. A network executive liked it so much and the rest they say is history!

2. The official number of times where Kenny is shown to be dead or killed in an episode, including all the controversial ones: 97 total deaths! If you’re wondering, “What’s a controversial death?”, we’re talking scenes where it’s unclear how (or if) he actually died. Ouch.

3. The alphabet chart above Mr. Garrison’s chalkboard reads, “DiOsMiOhAnMaTaDoHaKeNnYbAsTaRdOs…”. If you break that down, it spells, “Dios Mio han matado ha Kenny, *bleep*”. In Spanish, this translates roughly to, “Oh my God they killed Kenny, you *bleep*!”.

4. A single episode of South Park original used to take 3 months to produce using stop motion and paper cut-outs. Now, it only takes 5 days as the show is animated using Maya, the same program used to animate “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within” (2001) and “Final Flight of the Osiris” (2003). This speed of development allows the series to reflect current events as the show is put together in a matter of days – making a new episode 6 days prior to the episode’s air date.

5. To date, South Park creators have only missed the deadline once, when South Park Studios lost power.

6. The character Kenny on South Park is based on a real childhood friend of Trey Parker, who was named Kenny. He was the poorest kid in town, wore a large parka that muffled his voice and would frequently skip school, inspiring the running joke that “he died” by classmates.

7. George Clooney inquired about guest starring on South Park. He was offered the role of Stan’s dog. He accepted, voicing several very good barks. Jay Leno has also provided the meows for Cartman’s cat. However celebs such as Samuel L. Jackson, Steven Spielberg, and Jerry Seinfeld, asked to do guest voices, but were either rejected or declined the offer afterward.

8. There is a mutated gene in fruit flies which causes them to die in 2 days when infected by a certain bacteria. This gene is named Kenny, after Kenny McCormick from South Park.

9. South Park has won 4 Primetime Emmy Awards and has been nominated 12 times. South Park has won many other awards and accolades for their writing and for the character of Cartman. For example, in 2006 Comedy Central received the Peabody Award for South Park’s “stringent social commentary.”

10. 13 years after its debut, South Park is still Comedy Central’s highest rated show, averaging 3.5 million views an episode in the US. In 2007, Time Magazine included South Park in its list of “100 Greatest Shows of All Time”.

Now in its 18th season, “South Park” continues to surprise even its most devoted fans each and every week. Known for its unbelievably immediate and ruthless responses to world events, “South Park’s” new episodes bring up-to-the-minute news and pop culture icons (including Al Gore, J. Lo, Kanye West, Oprah, Sir Elton John, Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and P. Diddy) to the town of South Park for social commentary and good old-fashioned ridicule.

Wanna watch it? You can! Only on Comedy Central HD on HyppTV! ;)
