Awesome food? Check. Great coffee? Check. Cleanliness? Check. But is it a pet-friendly cafe? Oh yes!

With the booming of coffee culture in Malaysia, pet-loving enthusiasts have jumped onto the cafe-hopping bandwagon and have started to want to bring their pets along to “hipster-esque” cafes on weekends. Unfortunately, there are always cafe owners who will kindly remind us about the cafe’s no-pet policy, indirectly telling us that our pets are not allowed to spend a perfect Sunday afternoon with us.

Thus, a lovely brunch experience with our furkids is effectively ruined :(

But! Thankfully, there are some cafe owners who understand overly-attached pet owners and have lifted the ban for them to enjoy their coffee dates with their furkids. In fact, most of the cafes are happy to invite them furkids over as long as the pets are well-trained and do not bother the other customers.

To save you from all the trouble of finding out just which ones are pet-friendly, we ‘ve compiled some of our favourite pet-friendly cafes in Malaysia:

1. The Red Beanbag (Outdoor only)

“Some stairs are worth climbing” and the stairway to the Red Beanbag is one worthy flight of stairs. Tucked away in a corner of Publika Shopping Gallery, the Red Beanbag incorporates a rustic and vintage style into their Australian-inspired cafe. The relaxing vibe and soothing music will make you feel right at home while the friendly staff will warm your hearts with their bright smiles and great customer service.

Thus, it came as no surprise that their service includes inviting our furry friends over to chill with us while we enjoy a hearty, homemade brunch. The Red Beanbag is best known for its Eggs Benedict and Baked Eggs but there’s no harm trying out their other offerings that can be chosen from both light side or dark side of the menu.

  • Location: Lot A4-1-8, Solaris Dutamas, Jalan Dutamas 1, Kuala Lumpur (opposite The Social)

2. Marmalade Cafe (Outdoor only)

What better way to enjoy a relaxing afternoon than chilling at Marmalade Cafe that has long been known for its casual ambience and welcoming environment! After moving out from Desa Sri Hartamas to Bangsar Village II and Publika, Marmalade Cafe remains one of the best places to have breakfast or brunch in KL even after their major renovation. On top of its healthy food choices, customers also keep going back for their revitalising drinks such as the Detox Helper and Cool Cucumber as well as their smoothies including Marmalade’s Rise And Shine and Peachy Passion.

But that’s not all! The cafe’s Publika branch offers the “awesome-pawsome” al fresco dining which allows us to enjoy our meal while our pets sit by our sides. Just admit it. Wouldn’t that be a perfect Sunday afternoon for both the pet owners and the pets?

3. Haikara Style Cafe (Outdoor only)

“Carpe diem. Seize the day.”

Despite being situated near one of the most congested places in Subang, Haikara Style Cafe stands out as a quaint little cafe that has successfully positioned themselves away from the chaotic city. The Japanese husband and wife team gives their customers a taste of a Japanese-style cafe through their iconic Sumiyaki coffee - a Japanese charcoal roast prepared in a Japanese Siphon style coffee maker.

Just like most pet-friendly cafes, pet owners are allowed to bring their pets to enjoy their meal at the outdoor area of the Japanese-infused Western bakery and cafe. But we must add that it is best to ask permission from the cafe owners before bringing your pets to the cafe.

  • Location: E-Tiara Ground Floor, Jalan Kemajuan SS16/1, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor.
  • Business hours: Closed on Monday / Tue – Fri 11am – 3:30pm & 5:30pm – 10pm / Sat – Sun 10am – 10pm

4. La Casa Café

Although Desa ParkCity is a great place for dog lovers to hang out, pet-friendly outlet La Casa Cafe is no longer there. Not too long ago, the cafe decided to move out of their original branch in Desa ParkCity to set up their new outlet in Publika instead. From hearty breakfast choices to desserts galore, the new La Casa Cafe has so much more to offer than their previous outlet. In fact, the cafe serves up some great coffee for the patrons as the cafe obtained the beans exclusively roasted by Japanese maestro Kato San.

Situated in front of Publika’s outdoor square, the new La Casa Cafe offers the perfect seats for pet owners to enjoy their meals with their pets at the spacious patio area. In fact, one can even choose to stay indoors in the cosy air-conditioned environment together with their pets if they don’t enjoy the warmth of the sun.

  • Location: Level G2, Publika 1 Jalan Dutamas 1 Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur.

For those who are on the lookout for something nostalgic with a fresh twist of uniqueness, Fat Spoon Cafe could be just the place you’re looking for! With its rustic old school decor, going to Fat Spoon Cafe will take you on a trip down memory lane. No, Kalamazoo is not a “zoo” but you can definitely relate it as one of the best pet-friendly cafes in PJ area. Located at Aman Suria in PJ, Kalamazoo Cafe was named after a city in Michigan, a place where the owners spent a majority of time as students in Western Michigan University. However, there hasn’t been a day that goes by without craving for the all-American food they’ve had in Kalamazoo. Thus, Kalamazoo Cafe was born.

From milkshakes to burgers to pork ribs, Kalamazoo Cafe has everything you want from an all-American diner-cum-cafe. The cheerful decor in the cafe definitely reflects an American vibe! As long as pets are well trained, Kalamazoo Cafe welcomes pet owners and their furkids with wide open arms.

  • Location: A-G-36, Jalan PJU 1/43, Aman Suria Damansara, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Malaysia (Located same row as Betty’s Midwest Kitchen)
  • Business hours: 11am till 10pm (Closed on Tuesday)

7. The Bee (Outdoor only)

We’ve been to The Bee a couple of times and it has always been one of our favourite places to chill or just hang out whenever there’s a music gig. Positioned to be a neighbourhood food and drink joint that serves fuss-free food and quality coffee, both the Publika branch and Jaya One branches have al fresco dining that allow patrons to spend their quality time with their pets. The Bee in Jaya One even had a pet adoption drive and fundraiser for the public to show their love and support for our furry friends.

The casual ambience set the mood for a casual brunch date or dinner date for patrons while providing some entertaining activities for patrons to enjoy their date. Thus, pet owners can just come by and relax with their furry friends and the friendly waiters are usually more than willing to make you feel right at home.

  • Jaya One’s branch: K-G-2A, Palm Square, Jaya One, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
  • Publika’s branch: 36B, Level G2, Publika, Solaris Dutamas, Jln Dutamas 1, Kuala Lumpur

8. Blue Cow Cafe

If you’re looking for a place to indulge in some barbecued goodness, look no further. First opened under the name “Fogal Meat Market Deli”, Blue Cow Cafe and Deli has a vast selection of barbecued dishes to choose from. The cafe prides themselves for providing the best handmade sausages in town, including Merguez, Farmer, Hunter, and Bratwurst.

The cafe once became the talk of the town, not only for its heavenly big BBQ breakfast set, but also for allowing pets at their outdoor dining area. Let’s just say that Blue Cow Cafe is a perfect place for gorging on their juicy appetising meats while enjoying a glass of wine.
