#MH17: United In Grief For Malaysia’s National Day Of Mourning

For Malaysians, today brought back memories of the initial shock that pierced through their hearts upon hearing news of Malaysia Airlines’ downed Flight #MH17 on 17th July 2014. Truly, the past 37 days has been a long and emotional journey for not only Malaysia Airlines, the families, friends, and loved ones of those who were affected by the tragedy, but also our entire country.

While investigations are still underway to determine the cause of the ill-fated flight, Malaysia continues to mourn the loss of her countrymen.

Decked in dark colours and with warm but heavy hearts, we welcomed the #MH17 victims back as the special plane flew them in from Amsterdam, touching down at Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 9:55am. The solemn and dignified reception was accorded a full military ceremony, with a total of 300 military personnel from the 12th Infantry Brigade on duty to ensure that the remains are treated with utmost respect and dignity.

All coffins and urns which returned were draped in the “Jalur Gemilang”.

The reception was witnessed by Malaysia’s King Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah and Queen Hajah Haminah as well as Prime Minister Najib Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor. Malaysian Cabinet ministers, ambassadors, and the families that the victims left behind were present too. A minute-long moment of silence was then observed nationwide after the last of the remains is brought into the designated hearse.

Today, on a Friday, 22nd August 2014, we Malaysians are reminded again of how real the pain is and we’re united in grief. The healing process will be an equally long and emotional one, but at least our fellow Malaysians are finally home.
