If you like dark comedy, this one’s for you!
Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, In Bruges is a 2008 dark comedy film that stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two Irish hitmen in hiding. Filmed in the Belgian city of Bruges, the film is a mixture of action comedy with Shakespearean tragedy and as messed up as that sounds, it works! Acknowledge as one of the best original films of 2008, the film lives and dies by director, Martin’s words and Collin’s power to get the audience to sympathise with his character of a bigoted hitman is simply amazing.
Not since, Pulp Fiction has there been a hitman duo as dynamic as Ray (Collin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson). Total opposites of each other, they don’s just argue over the smallest things, they also get into deep conversations about life, death and everything else that matters.
In Bruges was the opening night film for the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and was opened on limited release in the United States on February 8th, 2008. The film premiered at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival on February 15th, 2008 before going for a full release in Ireland on March 8th, 2008.
In Bruges won Collin Farrell a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for the film and Martin McDonagh was awarded with a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay and a British Independent Film Award for Best Screenplay in 2008.
