Yo! This is Mr. Dan reporting for HYPE’s OnScene! and on Wednesday night, the DJ had me falling in love…with Hip-Hop music! Yezzur, that’s right! Last night, I saw a crowd become a slave to the master skills of one man that has transcended from one generation of Hip-Hop to the other. Thanks to the good people at Brightbox & Heavy Boogie, we were blessed by the amazing turntabling skills of DJ Jazzy Jeff!

So, things kicked off a little over 9.30 PM where local heroes The Crib Show, consisting of DJ Lethal Skillz, DJ Augie and emcees Vandal & Truf brought their entertaining mix of old school Hip-Hop with 2 DJs & MCs thrown into the mix. Right after that of course, was Kristian Hernandez who set the tone slightly mellower than expected, but he still managed to get a lot of heads bobbin’ with his mix of breakbeats, new age soul as well as instrumental Hip-Hop, soundin’ like something straight outta J Dilla‘s mind! In came Complex, right after with his high-paced cuts and scratches getting everyone hot and heavy on the dance floor, anticipating that one man to walk onto the console to start.

That man, the magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff came on stage round‘ midnight. And the dynamics of a Hip-Hop party as you would know, completely changed for the better! Being introduced by his long time collaborating hype man & fellow rapper SkillzJeff took the stage with an intro piece displaying his flawlessly timed cuts and beat juggles that had the whole Rootz club with their jaws to the floor. The party then started with all the famous old school Hip-Hop joints that you used to listen to back in the day (if your an 80s/early 90s baby, that is) getting everybody on the dance floor thrilled and put into a trance where you just can’t stop dancing.

The music then transitioned into a more new soul vibe while also dabbling into the new school Hip-Hop sound. Of course, at this point, the club was already some what packed to the brim and the dance floor was packed with people enjoying and appreciating timeless good music that they probably hear in ears. From interesting music selections, to ‘live-right-there-on-the-spot’ mixing/sampling, to the ever energetic Skillz on the mic, ist was nothing short of a memorable event, especially for those who hold Hip-Hop music close to their hearts. Some of the golden classics dropped on Wednesday night also made us reminisce of a time where Black orientated music reigned supreme, while reiterating our real age or at least the era we come from. Haha.

Dinosaur or not, Wednesday night was made cool. Given that Malaysian Hip-Hop enthusiast hardly ever get the chance to witness events like this, it was a breath of fresh air. So rejuvenating. Like you remember those days when your used to rock Jordans & kick it at the basketball court. The days when Fresh Prince of Bel Air was actually still airing on local TV. Damn, I miss those days. Thanks for the memories, Skillz and Jazzy Jeff. Until they next time we meet, you are, as they all say…magnificent.

Super special shoutout to our friends at Brightbox and Mark Lorrigan for giving Hype Malaysia a chance to.. boogie!
