The world is in mourning as former South African President Nelson Mandela, 95, has died peacefully after battling a lung infection. Mandela, who led South Africa out of apartheid and became the nation’s first black president, passed away in the company of his family at around 8:50pm.

South African President Jacob Zuma announced in a statement to the nation’s people.
“He is now rested, he is now at peace,” Zuma said, as huge crowds grew outside the former leader’s home. ”Our nation has lost its greatest son, our people have lost a father.
Mandela served as South Africa’s president from 1994-99.
Over the last decade of his life, Mandela presided over a series of “46664″ concerts in South Africa, named for Mandela’s prison number (466) and the year he was jailed, 1964.
