Many know Amy Winehouse, the English singer-songwriter who took breaths away with her exceptional music. Yesterday marked a very special day as we celebrate her birthday.
A very special friend of the editor, Robin Banerjee; a guitarist based in London that has toured the world playing extensively in Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States with Amy Winehouse, appearing also in her album Back to Black. He has also performed with Amy in festivals like Glastonbury, Jools Holland and BBC Radio amongst others; takes us through this experience exclusively for Hype Malaysia!
He has vast experience in all music genres and currently plays with International bands like Jazz Jamaica, Cuban Bands at Floridita in Soho, and many other jazz groups in the top jazz venues of the country including Ronnie Scotts, The Jazz Café, 606 Jazz Club and Pizza Express.
How and when did you start performing alongside Amy Winehouse?
I first met Amy in 2004 at a Jazz Festival in the UK. Amy saw us perform when we played at The Jazz Cafe in Camden and she said we would work together someday. From that introduction I was asked to join Amy on tour in 2006-2007.
What was your reaction when you found out Amy was no longer with us? How did you find out?
I was onstage at Proud Gallery, performing an afternoon set of Jazz. Just as I was about to finish the set, a fellow band member broke the news as I came off the stage.
