We know him as Michael Scofield, who tried every single way to break out of prison but Wentworth Miller broke out of his shell with ease to announce that he was gay. Miller came out to take a stand against homophobia in Russia and made it clear when he turned down an invitation to a Russian Film festival when the country passed a series of anti-gay laws. The actor had been invited to attend the St Petersburg International Film Festival, declined the offer saying “As a gay man, I must decline,” made public by the campaigning group GLAAD. Miller added “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly”.
Gay rights advocates praised the actor saying it sends powerful message to LGBT Russians who are currently experiencing violence and persecution. The law was passed in June by Russian President, Vladimir Putin, banning the adoption of Russian-born children by gay couples. A law passed in 2012 also banned public gay pride events in Moscow for the next 100 years. The mentioned laws caused quite a stir amongst international athletes who will be heading to Russia for the upcoming 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
