Naomi Watts takes on Diana role in upcoming movie

Sixteen years after her passing and we’re still keeping her near and dear to our hearts. The late Princess Diana, known throughout the world as ‘The People’s Princess’ is brought back to life in the most anticipated movie titled ‘Diana’.  Naomi Watts, who plays the lead role of Diana, describes the role as “high risk,” appearing in the newly released trailer of the movie, with striking resemblance to the late princess from her hair to her toes.

The British actress was offered the role, and with much hesitance she accepted it saying “It was a story that was going to be told, and I just felt like she was a fascinating woman”. The movie was originally called ‘Caught in Fight’, though later changed to ‘Diana’; tells the story of the princess’ long-time love affair with Dr Hasnat Khan, allegedly “the love of her life”, who is played by Naveen Andrews.

The movie gives insight on how the princess found happiness within herself, thus evolving into a world renowned humanitarian. Watts, 44, immersed herself right into the role with research materials, biographies and had mentioned that she spent every single day, for weeks, listening to Martin Bashir’s interview with the princess.

“I did not want to get involved in performance mimicry, but I did want to be exact as possible with the Bashir interview because everybody knows and remembers that well” said the actress. We wait patiently to decide if Miss Watts has played the role of the princess well when it hits our theatres.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, the eldest child and heir apparent of Queen Elizabeth II. The princess was of an aristocratic family with royal ancestry.

Her wedding to Prince Charles on 29th July 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral is a historical moment as it was viewed by over 750 million people worldwide. The princess was an avid humanitarian and glamourous, gracing red carpets to steal the limelight with her gorgeous wardrobe ensemble and her distinct hairstyle.

However, the princess’ life flipped when rumours of Prince Charles patching things up his former girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles and the alleged rumour that Charles was also courting Tiggy Leggy-Bourke, the then nanny of Prince William and Henry.

The couple split in 1996 as Diana begun dating Dr Hasnat Khan privately and briefly. She then dated Dodi Al Fayed in 1997 and it was a tragic moment for the world when she was pronounced dead in Paris, France on the 31st August 1997, following a fatal car crash.
