Taking the entertainment world by storm, Robin Thicke is no newbie to the music scene. Breaking into the industry as early as 1994, Thicke has been behind the scenes and today, rocking his new hit ‘Blurred Lines’ taking centre stage. The singer-songwriter has written and produced music for renowned R&B artists such as Brandy, Jordan Knight, Christina Aguilera and Mya.
Little do we know that Robin came from a star-studded family, having the famous Canadian television host, Alan Thicke as his father and ‘Days of Our Lives’ actress-singer, Gloria Loring as his mother. In year 2002 is when he had his commercial breakthrough, known by his last name, Thicke, with his single ‘When I Get You Alone’ sampling Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven” ; a disco rendition of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. It became a chart topper worldwide and the success lead Thicke to release his first album called A Beautiful World. The album debuted at only #152 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, eventually selling only 63,000 copies.
Although A Beautiful World did not gain it’s much deserved popularity, Robin Thicke came back to perform as a guest star on the remix of Will Smith’s song “Switch” in 2005. Pharrell Williams, producer-rapper-singer and head honcho for the infamous The Neptunes label, Star Trak, signed Robin and began working on his second album titled “The Evolution of Robin Thicke” briefly after. His first single “Wanna Love You Girl” hit chart success on urban radio in the United Kingdom, with Robin débuting a brand new look, after cutting off his trademark long locks. Thicke toured with his peers, India Arie and opened for fellow R&B soul singer, John Legend in late 2006 as a promotional to promote the album.
However, his second song from the album ‘Lost Without You’ featuring his ever gorgeous actress wife, Paula Patton in the video, became his breakout hit, reaching as high as number fourteen on the BillBoard Hot 100 charts and number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Song and with much hard work and promotion, The Evolution of Robin Thicke became his groundbreaking success in the United States in year 2007.

Since then, he continued producing and releasing albums, and in year 2008, he released his third solo album titled Something Else debuting number three on the Billboard 200 with the infamous single ‘Magic’ which peaked at number two on the Urban AC Charts and his following success with second single, “The Sweetest Love” which also hit number two on the charts.
Robin has gained much popularity with his mostly self-produced music with help from his musical peers. In the winter of 2009, he released his fourth studio album which is not self-produced titled Sex Therapy featuring renowned rapper Jay Z and Nicki Minaj on the album. Robin stayed true to his music with influences of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Al Green said the gorgeous R&B hunk but for Sex Therapy, he wanted to show off the ‘hip-hop’ side of him.
Robin doesn’t stop when it comes to his music. In year 2011, he released his fifth studio album called “Love After War” which was released in December. Robin mentioned that the inspiration of the album came from his family with the birth of his first son, Julian Fuego Thicke in 2010. The album was a success with the release of the first video on Vevo featuring his sizzling hot wife, Paula Patton, making up with Robin after a fight in ‘The Sweetest Love’. In July 2012, Robin took a dip into the world of acting with his debut against Jaime Pressly in Jimbo Lee’s Abby in the Summer.
A year later, on July 6 2013, Blurred Lines, his sixth studio recorded album was released, debuting his single ‘Blurred Lines’ featuring rapper T.I and Pharrell. Robin strayed from his usual sounds of smooth R&B to somewhat a more ‘poppy’ tune to his music turning to produces like Timbaland, old time friend and peer, Pharrell, will.i.am and of course, Mr Thicke himself. The single created quite a hullabaloo with feminists calling it ‘rape-y’ and ‘demeaning’ to women but Robin comes back to defuse the situation in an interview with the Today show saying, “I think [it does] what great art does. It’s supposed to stir conversation, it’s supposed to make us talk about what’s important and what the relationship between men and women is, but if you listen to the lyrics it says ‘That man is not your maker’ — it’s actually a feminist movement within itself.” When questioned about the direction of the song, he added “When we made the song, we had nothing but the most respect for women and — my wife, I’ve been with the same woman since I was a teenager. So for us, we were just trying to make a funny song and sometimes the lyrics get misconstrued when you’re just trying to put people on the dance floor and have a good time, but we had no idea it would stir this much controversy. We only had the best intentions.”
Despite the controversy, the album carries a more upbeat fun tunes not leaving out his familiar falsetto with songs such as “Ain’t No Hat For That” which kick starts with Robin’s three-year-old son, Julian’s voice over. Did you also know that Alan ‘Big Papa’ Thicke also lend a helping hand co-writing that song? This year will mark Robin Thicke’s first VMA performance. He is in the running for 4 Moonmen for his sexy video “Blurred Lines” featuring T.I. and Pharrell including “Video of the Year”, “Best Male Video”, “Best Collaboration” and “Best Song of the Summer”.
