Within a blink of an eye, it’s August. And what better way to start the month with Hype Malaysia’s Top 5 Must-Watch Movies!

1. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (7th August)

Based on a series of novels by Rick Riordan, the first Percy Jackson was positioned as the next Harry Potter, which might have put it at a disadvantage. Yes, there are some fantastical elements to the film’s premise – which centers on the son of Poseidon and his adventures with various mythological creatures – but this was clearly something different,  in a good way. And although Logan Lerman hasn’t caught on like some other young actors, he’s still someone worth keeping an eye on. The first film was a fun ride with some solid effects created on a very modest budget, so we’re interested to see how this sequel turns out.

2. Elysium (9th August)

The film stars Matt Damon as a factory worker living on an overpopulated Earth whose only hope is to hijack his way onto Elysium, a man-made space utopia where sickness doesn’t exist and every luxury is at your fingertips. Also on Elysium is Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a seemingly stern businesswoman who wants nothing more than to keep the populations of Earth and Elysium separate.

3. Kick Ass 2 (16th August) (NSFW Trailer Alert!!)

Kick-Ass 2 picks up where the previous film left off, with Dave Lizewski and Mindy Macready both in high school, but also pulling double-duty as crime fighters. However, they are not alone this time around, having formed a “justice league” of sorts with the aforementioned Colonel and a few others. And it’s only when Red Mist returns – with a new, more menacing moniker – that things start to really heat up.

4. Jobs (16th August)

He was one of the greatest inventors of our generation, or perhaps any generation, but he was also a ruthless businessman. Jobs tells the story of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and his quest to deliver high-end electronics to the masses. And while most know where Jobs ended up, few know how he got there. Starring Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs.

5. The World’s End (23rd August)

Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind’s only hope for survival. Starring  Rosamund Pike, Simon Pegg and Martin Freeman.

Take note folks, the dates of the premiere shown are for US theatres only!
